CSUB and The Master's Exhibition Approaches

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – It's almost here – the 2021 women's soccer season. Twenty-one months and two weeks removed from a clean sheet over Chicago State in their final home contest of the 2019 season, CSU Bakersfield women's soccer returns to the Main Soccer Field for an exhibition match against The Master's University, Friday night.

Kick-off between the Roadrunners and the Mustangs is set for 7 p.m.

Bakersfield was unable to have a 2020 season, when the Big West opted out of Fall competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The women's soccer program will finally see its first campaign in the new conference in 2021.

"We have an extremely young group, but it is a very talented group," explained fourth-year head coach Sebastian Vecchio. "We added some very good players to our roster, we have some quality returners, and we have some players that have improved tremendously since the last time we played a real game."

The Roadrunners recorded a 9-9-2 overall record in 2019, their final season in the Western Athletic Conference, ending the season on a three-game unbeaten streak.

CSUB returns nine from that season, including top-returning goal scorer Chelsee Duran. She scored four goals and had three assists on the year to earn a WAC All-Freshman Team award.

2019 All-Freshman Team honoree Jasmine Bowman also returns bringing veteran leadership to a young defensive group. Bowman appeared and started in all 20 matches and led the team in minutes.

Seniors Caitlin Goetjen and Chay Navares should also make an impact on the back line this season. Goetjen and junior forward Darian Tatum round out returning goals scorers with two and one, respectively.

Twenty-one out of the 30 on the roster have no Roadrunners experience on the pitch, including a pair of freshmen goalkeepers in Flavia Burrell and Haley Slouka. A home scrimmage with TMU on Friday gives the young Roadrunners squad an opportunity to see what areas might need fine tuning before their non-conference slate begins next weekend, Aug. 21.

"This is by far the hardest working group we have had at CSUB and one of the best group of people I have worked with," said Vecchio. "It's going to be a very challenging year, where we are still dealing with lingering effects of the pandemic, but we are excited to compete again!"

All home non-conference games, and all Big West matches, will stream live on ESPN+ this season.

CSUB Athletics is excited to welcome fans back to the Main Soccer Field for Roadrunner home events this season. At this time, fans are required to wear a face mask at all times while at the Main Soccer Field. CSUB Athletics will continue to follow campus, city, state, and federal guidelines regarding COVID-19 policies and safety procedures, which are subject to change at any time.

Tickets are available online or at the gate of the Main Soccer Field.
