`Runners Come From Behind in Opener at UCSD

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield overcame an early four-run deficit and outlasted host UC San Diego to win the opener of a four-game series in La Jolla, 9-7. Jacen Roberson and Cody Holtz homered for the Roadrunners, as part of a 12-hit attack, as CSUB improved to 12-8 overall and 9-4 in Big West Conference play.

The `Runners needed eight innings from three relievers to sneak past the Tritons, who fell to 9-20 and 6-11 in league action.

Cody Tucker entered in the second and kept the UCSD bats in check for 4.2 innings, giving the offense the chance to come from behind for the seventh time this season.

Tucker would scatter six hits and struck out three, to pick up his second win of the season.

The `Runners jumped ahead in a five-run third, and never trailed again, with the big blow Roberson's three-run homer to straight-away right.

In his first action since leaving the opener at Hawai'i with a lower body injury, the CSUB center fielder finished 1-for-4, with a walk, a run scored and three runs driven in. He also made a pair of exceptional defensive plays in support of Bakersfield pitchers.

Eric Charles, Nick Grossman and Cody Holtz all had two hit days for the `Runners. Holtz finished 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored.

Tyler Jorgensen drove in a pair, including the winning run, when he singled up the middle in the fifth.

Noah Cordova pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, collecting a hold and calming things down for Bakersfield in the late innings.

Freshman left-hander Jack Lee entered with two outs in the ninth and induced a ground ball to end the game and pick up his first career save.

The UCSD series continues tomorrow with a double header beginning at noon. Right handers Aaron Charles and Ethan Skuija will start for Bakersfield in the twin bill.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• With one out in the bottom of the first, the Tritons loaded the bases, on two walks and a hit by pitch, before catcher Aaron Kim belted the first pitch he saw from CSUB starter Art Joven well over the fence in left for an early 4-0 lead.
• The Tritons put the first two batters on thanks to two more walks in the second, but Tucker entered in relief and retired three-straight to end the threat. He made a nice defensive play of his own to get a force out at third following a sacrifice bunt attempt, before inducing a ground ball to second baseman Jashia Morrissey, who started an inning ending double play.
• The `Runners erupted to take a 5-4 lead in the third. Aaron Casillas put CSUB on the board when he doubled into the right field corner to score Cody Holtz. Three batters later, Roberson tied the game with his three-run bomb out to right field. Jorgensen's RBI ground out scored Evan Berkey to give Bakersfield its first lead of the day.
• Kim answered with his second home run of the day in the bottom of the third, driving a solo shot over the right field fence to tie the game at five.
• Holtz led off the fourth with a solo home run of his own, putting CSUB back on top 6-5.
• Bakersfield extended its lead to 8-5 in the fifth, thanks to RBI singles from Jorgensen and freshman third baseman Nick Salas.
• Marc Filia scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth, after UCSD had loaded the bases on two walks and an infield single.
• Morrissey pushed CSUB's lead back to three when he slapped a double down the line in right to score Casillas in the top half of the sixth inning.
• Blake Baumgartner made it 9-7 when he connected for the Triton's third home run of the day, but that was as close as UCSD would get, as Cordova and Lee held them scoreless over the final 3.1 innings.

NOTABLE:
• Berkey extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the fifth inning, but his streak of seven-straight games with an extra-base hit came to an end when he finished 1-for-4.
• Jorgensen's fifth inning single kept his on-base streak alive. The CSUB first baseman has reached in 17-straight, dating back to Mar. 5. Jorgensen has reached in 18 of 20 games this season.
• Freshman left-hander Jack Lee picked up his first career save when he entered in the ninth to record the final out. Bakersfield has eight saves on the season, from eight different relievers.
• Bakersfield has won six of seven, the team's best stretch since winning eight of nine from Mar. 8-22, 2019. Both runs include a 3-1 series win at Hawai'i.

QUOTABLE:
Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On the team's come from behind win at UC San Diego…
"It was promising to see our club show composure and come from behind to win another game with timely hitting and excellent defense. We will need to clean up some things for tomorrow, including our base running which prevented us from adding on in the later innings. UCSD has an explosive offense and we had to play catch up today."
