Roadrunners, Tritons Split Double Header

Bakersfield, Calif. – The Roadrunners received strong starting pitching from seniors Aaron Charles and Ethan Skuija on Saturday but struggles at the plate forced CSU Bakersfield to settle for a double header split with host UC San Diego. The `Runners won the opener 3-2 but couldn't get anything going offensively in the nightcap and fell 7-1.

Charles threw five strong innings in game one, scattering five hits and allowing just one Triton baserunner to reach third base. He finished his outing with five strikeouts and earned his second consecutive win.

In the nightcap, Ethan Skuija tied a career high with 11 strikeouts in just six innings of work. Skuija allowed six runs, four earned, and was saddled with his second loss of the season.

The Tritons received strong starting pitching as well, getting five innings from Noah Conlon in game one and six innings of three hit ball from game two starter Aren Alvarez.

Bakersfield managed just 11 hits on the afternoon and scored in only two at bats.

Eric Charles, Evan Berkey and Tyler Jorgensen each recorded two hits on the day.

Kellen O'Connor pitched the final four innings of game one to earn his second save of the season.

CSUB and UCSD will wrap up their four-game series tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM Pacific. Right-handed pitcher Roman Angelo gets the ball for the `Runners, who are 5-0 on Sunday this season.

How it Happened – Game 1:
• Bakersfield sent nine men to the plate in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three times on RBI from Jacen Roberson, Nick Grossman and Jo Stevens. CSUB got singles from Grossman and Eric Charles in the frame to go with three walks and a hit by pitch.
• Blake Baumgartner put the Tritons on the board in the seventh with a two-run double down the line in RF. Three-straight reached for UCSD after Bakersfield recorded the first two outs of the inning.

Notable – Game 1:
• Morrissey (8), Berkey (12), Jorgensen (18) and Holtz (8) all extended lengthy on-base streaks in the opener. Morrissey and Berkey have at least one hit in each of those games as well.
• Charles entered his game one start with a 2.45 ERA, fourth best in the Big West. After five scoreless innings, the big right-hander lowered his mark to an even 2.00, with just six earned runs in 27.0 IP this season.
• In his last four outings, Charles has thrown 17.2 IP, allowing just 3 ER, striking out 15 and picking up two wins and a save.
• O'Connor picked up his second save of the season with 4.0 innings of relief and five strikeouts. He becomes the first CSUB reliever with two saves this season.
• Bakersfield was held without an extra base hit for just the third time this season and for the first-time in eight games.

How It Happened – Game 2:
• UCSD struck quickly in game two, using two doubles, a single and a walk to score four times in the first inning. Tate Soderstrom's bases loaded single to right slipped under the glove of Grossman to clear the bases. Catcher Aaron Kim followed with an RBI single to center for his sixth RBI of the series.
• The Tritons tacked on two more in the sixth on an RBI double from Logan White and an RBI single from Michael Fuhrman.
• Berkey created a run in the seventh, putting CSUB on the board. He singled with one out before advancing to second on a wild pitch, to third on a fly ball to right and scoring on an error by the UCSD second baseman.
•  The Tritons pushed their lead back to 7-1 when Blake Baumgartner led off the inning with a double and scored on a wild pitch.

Notable – Game 2:
• Jorgensen reached on a single in the fifth extending his on-base streak to 19 games.
• Berkey extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a seventh inning single. It's the longest active hitting streak in the Big West.
• Skuija struck out 11 Tritons and became the first `Runner pitcher to fan more than 10 opponents since Edgar Barclay struck out 12 on May 10, 2019 in a win over UT Rio Grande Valley.
• Skuija's also matched his career high in strikeouts in this one, a mark he originally set in a complete game win over Santa Clara on Mar. 2, 2019.
Cade Van Allen made his career debut for the `Runners and picked up his first career strikeout to end the 8th inning.
• After entering the day riding a streak of seven straight games with at least two doubles, the `Runners were held without an extra-base hit in both games of the double header.

Quotable:
Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On a hard-fought game one win…
"AC and Kellen threw the ball well and help from our defense allowed us to scratch out a close game in the opener. We did hit a few balls well, but they didn't fall to allow us to separate late in the game."

On Skuija's performance in a game two loss…
"Skuija pitched the ball well in game two but we did not help him out defensively. Offensively, we lacked quality at bats throughout the game and couldn't gain any momentum."

On tomorrow's finale…
"Winning on the road is never easy, but we do have a chance to win a series tomorrow and I know our guys will come ready to play."
