Skuija Dominant in Relief as `Runners Win Game, Series

Bakersfield, Calif. – Right-hander Ethan Skuija came out of the CSU Bakersfield pen and struck out eight over 5.1 innings of relief to earn the win and give the Roadrunners a series win at Hawai'i. CSUB won Sunday's finale, 7-4, to take the series three games to one and improve to 11-8 overall and 8-4 in Big West Conference play.

Bakersfield answered an early Hawai'i run with four in the top of the second, with the big blow a two-run double from second baseman Jashia Morrissey.

The Rainbow Warriors pulled as close as 5-4, chasing CSUB starter Roman Angelo after 3.2, but Skuija struck out Alex Baeza to end the inning and strand a pair. Hawai'i never threatened again.

Skuija would earn the win, his first of the season, and allowed just two base runners – a pair of singles – over his 5.1 innings of relief.

Four `Runners had two hit efforts. Morrissey, Tyler Jorgensen and Cody Holtz all finished 2-for-5, while shortstop Aaron Casillas was 2-for-2 with three bases on balls.

Morrissey finished with two runs batted in. Jorgensen, Kobe Silva and Nick Salas all had single RBI.

Nick Grossman walked twice and scored both times.

Bakersfield continues its eight-game road trip when it travels to fellow Big West newcomer UC San Diego for four games next weekend.

The Tritons dropped three of four to league-leader UC Santa Barbara this weekend, allowing 50 runs in the four-game series.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• With one out in the first, Scotty Scott reached on a bunt single and advanced to third on a throwing error by the third baseman Salas. He'd score one pitch later when Dustin Demeter roped the first offering he saw for a single to right.
• Salas singled with one out to score Grossman, after the latter had led off the top of the second with a walk. Three batters later Morrissey chopped one off the turf and over the first baseman for a two-run double. Salas and Casillas scored on the play.
• Silva's one-out sacrifice fly scored Grossman to give CSUB a 5-1 lead.
• Hawai'I made it 5-2 on a Jacob Igawa double off the wall in right. The Rainbow Warriors had put runners on the corner thanks to a walk and a hit by pitch.
• Jared Quandt tripled to lead off the UH fourth and scored on a balk by Angelo, cutting CSUB's lead to two. Later in the inning, a pair of singles from Stone Miyao and Scotty Scott made it 5-4.
Evan Berkey led off the seventh inning with a hustle double to shallow left field and came around to score on an RBI single from Jorgensen.
• Jorgensen single-handedly made it 7-4 in the ninth, when he singled to lead off the inning, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.

NOTABLE:
• Angelo, a junior right-hander tossed 3.2 innings, surpassing the 100-inning plateau for his CSUB career. He has now thrown 101.1 IP in three seasons at Bakersfield.
• With an RBI single in the 7th inning, Jorgensen extended his on-base streak to 16 games.
• Berkey finished 1-for-4 and now owns a 10-game hitting streak.
• In his last two relief outings, Skuija has thrown 9.0 innings, allowing just four hits and a single earned run, while striking out 12 and walking none.
• In Bakersfield's three wins in this series, relievers Noah Cordova, Cody Tuker and Skuija combined for 13 strikeouts, zero walks and just four hits allowed over 10.0 innings.
• Casillas was 4-for-6 with four walks in the final two games of the series.

QUOTABLE:
Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On how the team stuck together for a key series win…
"This was an important road series for our ball club and our confidence in each other grew substantially. We overcame some mistakes that we'll learn from moving forward. I'm proud of the effort our guys made to stick together and come out on top in a difficult place to play. Our guys are playing for each other and that led to some quality team wins in this series."

On Skuija's dominant outing in relief…
"Ethan took the game in his hands and threw with confidence today. He picked up our club we needed it most. He was in control with good stuff and made quality pitches in and out of the zone against a line-up that had swung the bat well the past two games."
