CSUB Splits Double Header at Hawai'i

Bakersfield, Calif. – Aaron Charles and Cody Tucker combined on a six-hitter leading CSU Bakersfield to a 4-1 game one win and a split of a double header at the University of Hawai'i on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners dropped the second game 9-4 and will look to clinch a series win behind Roman Angelo on Sunday, with first pitch set for 4:00 p.m. Pacific.

Charles scattered five hits over six innings of work to pick up his first win of the season, while Tucker threw three innings, allowing one hit and one walk to earn the save.

Tucker became the seventh CSUB reliever to earn a save this season.

Eric Charles, Evan Berkey and Tyler Jorgensen each recorded a pair of hits in game one.

Jorgensen drove in a run in the first with an RBI walk and Berkey staked Bakersfield to a 2-1 lead with an RBI double in the fifth.

Catcher Cody Holtz extended the lead to 4-1 with a single in the ninth.

Hawai'i used a seven run fifth to break open game two. The Rainbow Warriors homered twice in the inning, including a two-run job off the bat of Dustin Demeter and a grand slam from catcher Jared Quandt.

The two teams will meet again in Sunday's finale. Roman Angelo will get the start for CSUB, with Ethan Skuija available in relief. Hawai'i will turn to its bullpen to find its game four starter.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
• CSUB struck for a run in the top of the first inning when Hawai'i starter Austin Teixeira struggled to find his command in the early going. Teixeira walked three in the frame, including an RBI base on balls from `Runner first-baseman Jorgensen.
• Hawai'i evened the score in the second stringing together consecutive singles to start the inning, and getting a sacrifice fly off the bat of Konnor Palmeira.
Jashia Morrissey, Eric Charles and Berkey opened the fifth with three-straight hits. Berkey's double scored Morrissey from third base to give CSUB a 2-1 lead.
• Holtz plated two more in the top of the ninth, when his single led to an error that scored Jorgensen and Grossman.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
• The `Runners scored in the first for the second straight game when Eric Charles, Berkey and Jorgensen singled in succession with one away. Jorgensen's base hit scored Charles from third base giving CSUB an early 1-0 lead.
• Hawai'i tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from Adam Fogel.
• Berkey doubled in Morrissey to give Bakersfield a 2-1 lead in the fifth.
• The lead was short-lived, however, as Hawai'i responded with seven in the bottom half of the inning. The Rainbow Warriors took a 3-2 lead on a two-run home run from Dustin Demeter. Hawai'i made it 7-2 when Jared Quandt lofted a grand slam home run down the line in RF and increased its lead to 8-2 on a Demeter RBI double.
• CSUB cut the lead to 8-4 on RBI singles from Aaron Casillas and Morrissey in the top half of the sixth.
• Hawai'i scored three more times in the eighth on RBI singles from Demeter and Quandt. Scotty Scott added an RBI on a fielder's choice.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On a double header split with Hawai'i…
"We did enough well today to give us a chance to win the series tomorrow. We had opportunites on defense tonight to limit runs and we did not execute, and that cost us. Our pitchers managed leverage counts well and did a nice job to keep us in the game. Tomorrow is a new day and I expect we will be ready to play."
