Late Bronco Surge Beats Bakersfield

Santa Clara, Calif. – A five run Santa Clara fifth erased a 5-2 Roadrunner lead and the CSU Bakersfield baseball team dropped its third-straight game on Friday night at Schott Stadium. The Broncos added two in the seventh and three more in the eighth, grabbing a 12-5 victory in the first of this weekend's four-game series in the Bay Area. The `Runners dropped their third straight and fell to 5-7 on the year.

"Once again, we came out of the gate strong but couldn't take control of the game," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't cash in enough of our chances and let them off the hook in the middle innings. We still haven't put together a full 27 outs."

Three walks and a Nick Grossman RBI single game the Roadrunners an early 1-0 lead, but Santa Clara starter Matthew McGarry bounced back to strand the bases loaded when he coaxed a one out pop up, before ending the inning with his first strike out of the night.

The Broncos answered back immediately, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on a Ryan McCarthy sacrifice fly and Matt Jew's run-scoring single. Santa Clara seemed poised to extend the lead, with runners on the corners and just one out, but

CSUB starter Aaron Charles and catcher Angel Saldivar combined for a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play to end the inning.

Saldivar has thrown out three of four, would-be base stealers this season. As a team, the `Runners have cut down 70% of opposing stolen base attempts in 2020.

Bakersfield scored three runs in the third to chase McGarry after just 58 pitches.

Freshman CJ Rivers and senior Nick Grossman, sandwiched singles around a Tyler Jorgensen walk to load the bases with no outs. Will Picketts walked to force in Rivers, tying the game at two and ending McGarry's night.

Senior Daniel Carrizosa greeted Bronco reliever Locke Bernhardt with a sharp to left field to score Grossman and Jorgensen and give CSUB a 4-2 lead.

Picketts made it 5-2 when he scored from third on a Bernhardt wild pitch in the fifth.

Just as it seemed Bakersfield might pull away, the Broncos answered with five in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.

Jason Dicochea's poked a two-run single up the middle to pull Santa Clara within one, and chase Charles after four-plus innings, before Jew rudely greeted reliever Jaykob Acosta with towering three-run homer over the batting cages in left.

Acosta settled in nicely and was a hard-luck loser after striking out eight Broncos in just 3.1 innings of work. The freshman from Exeter, Calif., struck out three in both the fifth and seventh innings.

Grossman finished the game 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. The senior is now 10-for-26 over the past eight games, reaching base at a .543 clip and scoring 11 times. He's now hitting .308 to rank fourth on the team in batting average after starting the season just 2-13.

"I've always started a bit slow, but Coach had faith in me and I'm hitting with more confidence now." said Grossman. "I'm just trying to get on base and score runs. If I can do that I can help us win a lot of games. We know what we're capable of, we just need to keep it simple and focus on doing our individual jobs. If we do that, things will fall into place."

Damian Henderson walked in the first and Jorgensen finished 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, to extend their season opening on-base streaks to 12.

Carrizosa added a fifth-inning base hit to his third inning single, finishing the game 2-for-4 with two runs driven in.

Santa Clara's Ryan McCarthy added a three-run home in the eighth to close out the scoring. McCarthy and Jew both finished 2-for-4 with four RBI for the Broncos.

Bernhardt and Alex Waldsmith combined to throw the final seven innings, limiting CSUB to one unearned run on four hits.

The two teams will face off again on Saturday, in a double header with game one set for a 1 p.m. start. Ethan Skuija will take the ball for Bakersfield. Its the fourth-time this season he'll be on the mound following a CSUB loss. In each of his first three outings, he's embraced his role as stopper with strong outings leading to Roadrunner wins.
