`Runners Drop Fourth Straight at Santa Clara

Santa Clara, Calif. – Daniel Carrizosa was 2-for-4 with a two-run single and a run scored, but CSU Bakersfield fell for the fourth-straight game losing at Santa Clara, in a game that featured multiple weather delays and lasted 4:31. The Broncos raced out to an early 7-0 lead and never trailed, outlasting the Roadrunners by a final of 10-3.

Ethan Skuija got the start for Bakersfield and allowed just three hits over 2.2 innings pitched, but struggled to throw strikes in the wet weather, walking five.

Santa Clara scored three unearned runs in the first and added four more in the second with Dawson Brigman's two-run single providing the biggest blow.

Following SCU's fourth inning outburst, heavy rains delayed the game for almost an hour and a half.

When play resumed freshman Isaias Miramontes took over on the mound for CSUB. Miramontes was dominant over four innings of work, striking out three Broncos and allowing just one hit. He has faced 15 batters across two appearances this season and surrendered just one hit and three total base-runners.

Bakersfield loaded the bases with one out in the sixth when Nick Grossman, Tyler Jorgensen and Eric Charles all walked. Carrizosa plated a pair two batters later when he looped the first pitch he saw behind over first to cut Santa Clara's lead to 7-2. The `Runners couldn't get any more runs across in the frame, as Evan Berkey's would be double down the right field line was snared by Santa Clara first baseman Ryan McCarthy.

CSUB added a run in the top of the ninth, when Jared Toothman picked up a sacrifice fly to score Carrizosa from third.

Damian Henderson finished the game 1-for-3 with a walk, as both he and Jorgensen extended their season-opening, on-base streaks to 13 games.

Grossman was 1-for-3, collecting at least one hit for the fourth straight game. He has seven hits in his last 14 at bats and is slashing .500/.632/.500 in that stretch.

The second game of Saturday's scheduled double header was washed out. A final decision on making up the game tomorrow has not yet been reached, but the two teams are set for a noon start in game three of this weekend's series.
