Barba’s Homers Lift Bakersfield to Series Win

CHICAGO – For the first time this season, a Roadrunner homered twice in the same game.  Leadoff man Noah Barba hit long balls in back-to-back at-bats in the second and fourth innings and the CSU Bakersfield baseball team locked up the No. 5 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament with an 8-2 victory over Chicago State.

Already leading 2-0 after the first inning because of Jesse Rowley RBI single and a Ryan Koch sacrifice fly, Barba lifted a 1-1 pitch over the right field wall to make it 3-0 in favor of the visitors.  The junior right fielder struck again in the fourth when he homered to right again on a 3-1 pitch.  It was the first time a CSUB player hit two home runs in the same game since Luis Martinez did it last year on April 19 against Hawaii.

The Roadrunners (23-33, 11-15 WAC) continued to build their lead in the fifth.  Rowley walked and Koch singled to start the inning and Rowley eventually came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 5-0 in favor of the visitors.

Roman Angelo (3-1) pitched four shutout innings before allowing two runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Angelo tossed six innings on the day and allowed six hits and struck out a pair in his third victory of the season.

After Chicago State closed the gap to 5-2 in the fifth inning, Evan Berkey increased the lead to 6-2 with a sacrifice fly in the seventh and singled home Cole Valletta in the ninth.  Daniel Carrizosa followed with a double to score Berkey in the final inning to add the last insurance run.

Andrew Ciandro pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings in relief of Angelo, and Davonte Butler needed just six pitches to finish off the Cougars in the ninth.

CSUB will be the No. 5 seed in next week's Western Athletic Conference Tournament.  Bakersfield will open the week against the No. 4, which has yet to be determined, at 2:00 p.m. inside Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz.

The victory also made it two straight series victories for the Roadrunners and they will look for their second sweep of the year tomorrow in the final game of the regular season.  CSUB and Chicago State will close the series tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. PST.
