Roadrunners Complete Sweep Over Chicago State

CHICAGO – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team scored six runs in the fourth inning and the pitching staff allowed just six hits on the day as the Roadrunners beat Chicago State 7-1 on Saturday to complete the sweep over the Cougars.

Isaiah Moten (2-4) was dominant on the mound on Saturday.  The senior allowed a home run to the second batter of the game, but settled down to give up just five more hits over his five innings pitched.  Moten struck out four in the outing.

The Roadrunner bats broke out in the fourth inning, scoring six of their seven runs on the day.  Tyler Jorgensen singled to start to start the rally and Ryan Koch blasted a home run to left center to put the visitors up 2-1.  With one out, Bakersfield would hit for the cycle in order in the next four batters.  Sergio Robles singled, Cole Valletta doubled, Evan Berkey tripled and Will Picketts slugged his first career home run to complete the cycle and give CSUB a 6-1 lead.

The CSUB bullpen was terrific in relief of Moten.  Kenny Johnson struck out three over the sixth and seventh innings, and neither Graham Kuck nor Kyle King allowed a hit over the final two frames.

The Bakersfield offense wasn't quite finished on the day after the fourth inning.  In the seventh, Tyler Jorgensen doubled down the right field line and two batters later Alex Gonzales knocked him in with a base hit.

Saturday's victory completed the weekend sweep over the Cougars.  It was the second sweep for the `Runners on the season as they beat Fairleigh Dickinson all four times at Hardt Field in non-conference action.  Yesterday's win produced the second straight series win for the Roadrunners after they beat The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley twice last weekend.

CSUB (24-33, 12-15 WAC) will make its seventh consecutive appearance in the WAC Tournament on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz.  The Roadrunners have earned the No. 5 seed and will take on fourth-seeded Grand Canyon.
