CSUB Comes Up Short in Series Finale

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team erased a 6-4 deficit with three runs in the eighth inning to take a 7-6 lead, but the Roadrunners couldn't hang on in Sunday's series finale, losing 8-7 to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Both offenses were hot out of the gates on Sunday afternoon.  The Vaqueros scored four times in the first inning against CSUB starter Ethan Skuija and added two more unearned runs in the third inning against freshman Roman Angelo

The Roadrunners scored twice in the first frame on Jesse Rowley's second home run of the series.  The home team added another run in the second when Damian Henderson led off the inning with a single and Tyler Jorgensen doubled him home with a shot to right center, but it was 6-3 Vaqueros at the end of three innings.

CSUB continued to claw back into the game in the fifth.  With one out, Daniel Carrizosa beat out an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error by the UTRGV shortstop.  Noah Barba singled to center field in the next at-bat to cut the lead to 6-4.

Angelo kept the Roadrunners within striking distance with the best performance of his young career.  The Bakersfield native took over for Skuija in the first inning and tossed 7.1 innings, allowing just three hits and two unearned runs.  It was a career-long start for Angelo and he fanned a career-best eight batters.  The freshman ended the relief appearance with an exclamation point, striking out the side in the eighth inning.

With Angelo cruising on the mound, the `Runner offense caught fire in the eighth and took a narrow 7-6 lead.  With two outs and Rowley on second after a double earlier in the inning, Henderson coaxed a walk and Jorgensen followed with a base hit up the middle to score Rowley.  Eric Charles tied the game in the next at-bat with a pinch-hit single that scored Henderson.  Cole Valletta walked to load the bases and Noah Barba worked another walk to give the Roadrunners a 7-6 advantage.

UTRGV reclaimed the lead in the next half inning, scoring solo tallies off of Kevin Altamirano and Kenny Johnson and the offense went down in order in the bottom half.

CSUB will close out the 2019 home schedule tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Loyola Marymount for a Monday matinee beginning at 2:00 p.m.
