Roadrunners Can’t Hang on Against LMU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Leading 9-6 after five innings, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team couldn't hold onto the lead against a tough Loyola Marymount University squad, losing 15-9 in the season finale at Hardt Field. 

The Roadrunners (21-33) jumped out to an early lead in Monday's back and forth affair.  Sergio Robles and Alexander Gonzales both had RBI singles to put CSUB up 2-0. 

Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Bakersfield went in front 7-5 with a four-run frame.  The Roadrunners walked four times in the inning, were hit by two pitches and got a two-run single by Gonzales.  CSUB increased that lead to 9-6 in the fifth.  Cole Valletta and Eric Charles started the inning with a pair of singles and both came around to score on a triple by Evan Berkey. 

The Lions flipped the game late, scoring nine runs over the final two innings and holding the Roadrunners scoreless over the final four. 

It was the fourth straight game the Bakersfield offense produced at least 10 hits.  Berkey, Gonzales and Charles all had a pair of hits, while Berkey and Gonzales both drove in three.  Berkey, Charles and Tyler Jorgensen also scored a pair of runs. 

Isaiah Moten got the start in his final game at Hardt Field.  Moten made his 71st appearance on Monday, which is good for third in CSUB history.  Kenny Johnson (0-2) was saddled with the loss after he gave up four runs in the eighth inning. 

CSUB will close the regular season this weekend with a three-game Western Athletic Conference series against Chicago State.  The series will begin on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. PST.
