Baseball Battles But Falls to No. 6 UCSB

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team got excellent pitching performances from Noah Cordova, Kevin Altamirano and Kyle King, but couldn't solve the UC Santa Barbara pitching staff in a 4-1 defeat at Hardt Field.

The trio of `Runner hurlers allowed just one earned run in Monday's contest and scattered eight hits.  Noah Cordova (0-4) allowed just three hits in 4.1 innings in his third start of the season.  Kevin Altamirano was the only pitcher to allow an earned run on the night after tossing 2.2 innings.  Kyle King needed 41 pitches and faced nine batters in his two innings, but pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings.  CSUB committed six errors on the evening and the leaky defense allowed the Gauchos to score an unearned run in the second and two more in the fifth.

CSUB had just three hits on the night and was shut out until Tyler Jorgensen drove in his team-leading 24th run of the season on a groundout in the seventh.  He scored Ryan Koch, who singled to center field to start the inning.

Eric Charles led off the game with a single and Nick Grossman singled in the sixth inning.  Senior catcher Jake Ortega walked twice.

Bakersfield (17-25, 5-10 WAC) will face another future Big West rival tomorrow when they head to UC Riverside for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
