Roadrunners Falter in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Playing a future Big West opponent for the second straight night, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team dropped a non-conference game to UC Riverside 6-3.

The Roadrunners (17-26, 5-10 WAC) jumped out to an early lead after they scored in the top of the first inning.  Evan Berkey singled with one out and promptly stole second.  The sophomore second baseman was then driven in by Jesse Rowley with a single up the middle.

After not allowing a hit in the first two innings, the Highlanders got to Andrew Ciandro (1-1) in his first career start.  UCR scored four runs in the third on three hits.  Mario Lopez relieved the sophomore with one out in the inning and after a walk, Lopez retired the next two batters to escape further damage.

The `Runners scored solo tallies in the fifth and the sixth, but were matched by the Highlanders in the bottom half of both innings.  Alexander Gonzales led off the fifth with a base hit, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a groundout by Nick GrossmanDaniel Carrizosa followed with another groundout in the next at-bat to score him.

In the sixth, Berkey scored again after walking to start the inning.  He eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Jorgensen.  It was Jorgensen's team-leading 25th RBI of the season.  The `Runners threatened for even more in the sixth, but left the bases loaded.

Lopez lasted 2.2 innings and gave up just one earned run before giving way to Kenny Johnson.  Johnson allowed an unearned run in the sixth, but allowed just two hits over the final three innings.

Bakersfield outhit UCR 8-6 and was led by Eric Charles at the plate.  The junior center fielder had two hits and a double, while Berkey scored a pair of runs.

The Roadrunners return to Hardt Field this weekend for a critical three-game, Western Athletic Conference series against Utah Valley.  The series against the Wolverines will begin Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
