Game Recap: Baseball |

`Runners Fall in Extras on Thursday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. Jake Ortega's two-run single in the ninth put Thursday night's baseball game into extra innings and the Roadrunners tied a school record with 16 strikeouts on the mound, but CSU Bakersfield was defeated by Northern Colorado in the 10th, 9-7.

Trailing 7-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Alexander Gonzales got the inning started with a pinch-hit double and Cole Valletta took advantage of a Bear miscue to reach first.  Evan Berkey moved them both up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt and Ortega came through when the `Runners needed him most with a base hit to left.

The visitors wasted no time in retaking the lead in the 10th as Northern Colorado scored twice in the next half inning to win the first game of the series.  Ethan Skuija (2-5) took the loss after allowing the two runs in the final frame.

CSUB (15-24, 3-10 WAC) dug out of an early 5-0 hole on Thursday night before losing in extra innings.  Darius Vines allowed five runs in the first two innings before settling in over the next four.  Vines struck out 10 batters on the night and fired six innings.  Davonte Butler allowed two runs in 2.1 innings pitched and Graham Kuck retired both batters he faced in the ninth to keep CSUB within striking distance.  In total, the four pitchers tied a school record with 16 strikeouts in the game.  The last time the `Runners had 16 Ks was back on May 10, 2014 against New Mexico State.

Bakersfield's four-run fourth inning got them back in the ball game.  Ortega, Ryan Koch, Jesse Rowley and Damian Henderson started the inning with four straight hits, including doubles by Koch and Henderson to make the score 5-2.  Sergio Robles knocked in Rowley on a sacrifice fly and Tyler Jorgensen plated Henderson with a triple to center.  Koch would later add a sacrifice fly in the seventh to score Will Picketts

Game 2 of the three-game Western Athletic Conference series will begin tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
