Carrizosa’s Big Night Leads `Runners to Victory

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Shortstop Daniel Carrizosa set new career highs with three hits and three RBI to lead the CSU Bakersfield baseball team to a 6-2 victory over Northern Colorado on Friday night.

The sophomore knocked in two runs in the fourth to give the home team a 2-1 advantage and struck again in the sixth to push the lead to 3-1.  In the fourth, Sergio Robles and Tyler Jorgensen both singled and moved up a base on a passed ball to set the stage for Carrizosa's two-out base hit.  He scored Robles again in the sixth after the senior reached on an error to lead off the inning.

CSUB (16-24, 4-10 WAC) added an insurance run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to take a commanding 6-1 lead.  Ryan Koch doubled home Jesse Rowley in the seventh and Jake Ortega brought home Jorgensen and Carrizosa to blow the game open.  Ortega was also spectacular behind the plate as he picked off two runners at first base and caught another stealing.

All six of Bakersfield's runs came with two outs.  Rowley and Koch both had two hits and a walk, while Robles and Jorgensen had a pair of safeties and two runs scored.

After giving up a run in the first inning, Edgar Barclay (5-2) dominated the Northern Colorado hitters.  He allowed just one hit after the first frame and struck out 10 batters in seven innings pitched.  Ethan Skuija picked up his first career save after he finished off the Bears with five strikeouts over the final two frames.

The duo combined to strikeout 15 batters after CSUB tied a school record with 16 strikeouts on Thursday night.  For the season, the Roadrunners have struck out 368 opposing hitters, which is already good for third in school history.  CSUB will break the school record of 386 soon.

Dating back to last season, the Roadrunners will look to win their fifth straight home series at Hardt Field tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
