CSUB Runs Away From Knights on Saturday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – For the second consecutive night against Fairleigh Dickinson, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team set a new season-high in runs scored and for the second straight evening the Roadrunners were victorious.  On Saturday night at Hardt Field, CSUB lit up the scoreboard for 12 runs to the Knights' two to take the first two games of the four-game series.

The `Runners dug themselves a 2-0 hole for the second straight game, but battled to reclaim a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning and never looked back.  The home team added five runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to blow out their opponents from New Jersey.

CSUB got on the board in the third frame after Noah Barba, Jake Ortega and Jesse Rowley all singled, and in the fifth, a Cole Valletta triple to right center scored Nick Grossman and Barba to put the home team on top for good.

A wild sixth inning saw the `Runners blow open a tight ballgame with five runs courtesy of singles by Barba, Ortega and Robles, three walks, two balks and an error by the FDU defense.  Robles drove in two for the inning and three for the game.

CSUB tacked on four more in the seventh.  Rowley had a two-run single, Robles added a sacrifice fly and Valletta drove in another on a fielder's choice to end the scoring.

The Roadrunner pitching staff didn't allow an earned run in the game and the CSUB bullpen didn't allow a hit in five innings of work.  Ethan Skuija struck out seven and allowed two unearned tallies in four innings.  Roman Angelo (2-1) picked up the win after he struck out four in three scoreless innings.  Noah Cordova and Andrew Ciandro also pitched spotless innings for the home team.

"As much as it was nice to see 12 runs, we did not play a very good baseball game today," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard.  "We were sloppy on defense and popped the ball up too often.  Ethan got by without commanding the zone and winning leverage counts.  Roman came in and did his job and that was pivotal turning point in the game.  When he shut the door on them we gained a lot of momentum and put some pressure on their defense.  They made a mistake or two that we capitalized on."

Barba scored three times for the second straight night out of the leadoff spot and he tied a career-high with three hits.  Ortega was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and raised his average to a blistering .425.  Rowley, Robles and Valletta all drove in three runs and Grossman walked three times.

CSUB (7-9) will go for the series victory against Fairleigh Dickinson (2-4-1) tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
