Roadrunners Win Second Straight Home Series

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.  – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team is on a roll at Hardt Field.  Nick Grossman hit a grand slam and the Roadrunners got seven strong innings out of starter Edgar Barclay to beat Fairleigh Dickinson 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.  With the victory, CSUB stretched its home winning streak to six games and won its second straight home series.  Both feats have not been accomplished since the 2017 season.

Grossman's blast to right in the bottom of the first gave the `Runners an early 4-0 cushion.  It was CSUB's first grand slam since Sergio Robles hit a four-run shot at UTRGV on March 23 of last season.  The `Runners kept the pressure on in the second as Noah Barba doubled and Will Picketts knocked him in with a base hit to make it 5-0.

Barclay (2-1) was in cruise control on the mound, striking out five straight Knights at one point in the second and third innings.  He finished the day with a career-best 11 in a season-long seven innings.  FDU managed an unearned run in the fourth and pulled to within three with another tally in the sixth.

The visitors nearly tied the score late.  The Knights scored a run in the eighth off of Kyle King and had the tying run on second base and the winning run on first against Kevin Altamirano in the ninth before CSUB manager Jeremy Beard called on lefty Graham Kuck.  With one out, Kuck struck out the first batter he faced and induced a game-ending ground ball to preserve the win.  It was the junior's first career save for CSUB.

Barba had three hits for the second straight game out of the leadoff spot and Will Picketts had a pair of base hits behind him.

CSUB (8-9) will go for the sweep against Fairleigh Dickinson (2-5-1) tomorrow and its seventh consecutive win at home at 12:00 p.m.
