`Runners Remain at Home Over Weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield baseball team will be back at Hardt Field this weekend when they host Seattle U on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The series against the Redhawks will be the Roadrunners' first Western Athletic Conference series in Bakersfield this season.  CSUB is an impressive 7-3 at Hardt Field in 2019.

Series History
Since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2013, the Redhawks and the Roadrunners have met 23 times including five times at the WAC Tournament.  It was Seattle U who CSUB beat twice in the 2015 Tournament to win the title and advance to its first and only NCAA Regional.  All-time CSUB holds a 13-10 advantage.

Last season in Seattle, the `Runners won the opening game of the three-game set 7-5, but dropped the final two games and the series.  Andrew Ciandro earned the Game 1 win after he threw the final three innings and didn't allow a run.  It is the only win of his career.  Noah Barba was locked in, in 2018 against the Redhawks.  He was 7-for-14 in the series with a home run and four runs scored.  Evan Berkey and Jassen Oliver hit .333 over the three games, while Daniel Carrizosa knocked in three and had four hits.

Scouting the Redhawks
Seattle U was expected to be one of the top teams in the WAC this season, but has really struggled out of the gates.  The visitors enter Hardt Field with just a 5-17 record and a 1-2 mark in conference action.  The Redhawks won 34 games last season and finished third at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.  Based on 2018's results and the return of one of the top pitchers in the league, Jake Prizina, Seattle U was picked to finish fourth in the WAC prior to the start of the year.  The Redhawks have yet to win a series this season and have been swept by UT Arlington and San Diego State.

At the plate, the Redhawks are hitting .284 and have three hitters with batting averages over .300.  Outfielder Kyle Sherick leads the way with a .349 average and 10 multi-hit games.  Sherick also leads the team in triples (2) and total bases (45).  Justin Mazzone was picked by the league coaches to the preseason all-conference team.  He's blasted five home runs and driven in 20 already this season.

On the mound, Friday starter Jake Prizina has been dominant this season.  He has a 3-1 record with just a 1.56 ERA.  Prizina is also holding opposing hitters to just a .190 average in six starts.  As a team, the Redhawks have a 4.50 ERA and have 157 strikeouts in 190 innings pitched.

Pitching Matchups
Friday: Darius Vines (4-1, 3.11 ERA) vs. Jake Prizina (3-1, 1.56 ERA)
Junior Darius Vines has been dominant at times this season and ranks 15th in the country in strikeouts with 52.  He has started six times so far this year and has thrown at least six innings and recorded at least seven strikeouts in each outing.  His 4-1 record is tops on the team and he has a 3.11 ERA through 37.2 innings pitched.  In his last start, Vines got the win at NM State after scattering eight hits in 6.2 innings pitched.  He allowed two runs in the second and two in third, but battled to hold the Aggies scoreless the rest of the way.

Saturday: Ethan Skuija (2-2, 3.69 ERA) vs. Jarrod Billig (0-2, 2.37 ERA)
Junior Ethan Skuija is coming off a tough outing against NM State.  He allowed six earned runs and five hits in just 1.1 innings pitched last weekend.  The Canadian was ranked second in the conference in strikeouts, but failed to record one in the outing.  Skuija had been on a pretty nice roll after a rocky season-opening start.  Prior to last Saturday, he had thrown at least six innings in three of his previous four starts, including a complete game against Santa Clara.

Sunday: Edgar Barclay (3-1, 2.80 ERA) vs. Tyler Yeh (1-4, 4.18 ERA)
Junior Edgar Barclay leads CSUB in ERA and WHIP (1.00).  He is also tied with Roman Angelo for tops on the team in opponent's batting average (.198).  Last weekend, Barclay struck out six batters and allowed six runs in five innings.  In the third inning, he allowed three home runs, including a three-run shot.  Barclay ranks second on the team and in the WAC in strikeouts with 45.

Dodger Ball
In honor of the start of the Major League Baseball season, CSUB will have two of the best promotions of the year on Friday night.  Fans will have a chance to win two Los Angeles Dodger tickets and a baseball autographed by Cody Bellinger.

Series Schedule
The series will begin tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. and will continue on Saturday at the same time.  The series finale will be at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
