CSUB Pounds NM State in WAC Opener

LAS CRUCES, N. M. – Facing not only the top offense in the Western Athletic Conference, but the top statistical lineup in the entire country, it was the CSU Bakersfield baseball team's attack that produced a season-high 17 hits in a 9-4 Roadrunner victory over New Mexico State to begin conference play.

"It was a quality team win tonight," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard.  "We had a lot of guys contribute against a quality ball club."

Leading 6-4, CSUB blew open a close game with three runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull away from the Aggies at Presley Askew Field.  Entering the game, NM State was 14-2 on their home turf.

Tyler Jorgensen had a breakout game for the visitors with a career-high four hits and five RBI.  The junior had a two-run double in the eighth that scored Jesse Rowley and Alex Gonzales to make the score 9-4 in favor of the visitors.  Earlier in the inning, Nick Grossman singled home Ryan Koch who doubled with one out.

The Roadrunners (13-10, 1-0 WAC) scored in six of the first eight innings in the victory.  NM State starter Brock Whittlesey (3-1) lasted five innings, but allowed 10 hits and five runs in the loss.  Jake Ortega and Ryan Koch got things going in the first inning to put CSUB up 1-0.  Ortega drilled a double to center field and Koch followed it up with a RBI base hit.  The visitors added two more in the second on a double by Jorgensen and a single by Jassen Oliver

The Aggies (15-6, 0-1 WAC) got to CSUB starter Darius Vines in the second and third innings, but that would be all they could come up with.  NM State cut the Roadrunner lead to 3-2 in second and took a slim 4-3 lead in the third.  Vines (4-1), however, would settle in and pitch 3.2 scoreless innings after relinquishing the lead and held NM State to just one hit down the stretch.  Roman Angelo relieved Vines and picked up the first save of his career after shutting out the home team the rest of the way.

It was the sixth straight start Vines has thrown at least six innings and had seven strikeouts or more.  The junior threw 6.2 innings on Friday night and fanned eight.

The Roadrunners tied the game in the fourth when Will Picketts doubled, took third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Jorgensen.  CSUB took the lead for good in the fifth when Rowley singled home Ortega, who led off the inning with a safety.  Ortega also set a career-high with four hits on the night.  Koch and Evan Berkey both had two hits and Rowley walked three times to lead the offense.

CSUB has won four straight games and 11 of its last 13 contests.  The Roadrunners will look to win their fourth straight series tomorrow when the two teams meet again at 1:00 p.m. PST.
