NM State Evens Series on Saturday

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – After the CSU Bakersfield baseball team won the opening game of the three-game series against New Mexico State last night, the Aggies evened the series at 1-1 with a 23-1 victory on Saturday.

NM State (16-6, 1-1 WAC) scored in all six of their at-bats on Saturday.  The Western Athletic Conference game was shortened to just seven innings because the Aggies were leading by more than 10 runs.  NM State scored three runs in the first and the second, put up solo tallies in the third and fourth and added 15 combined runs in the fifth and sixth.

Starter Ethan Skuija (2-2) got just four outs and gave up five hits and six runs.  Kenny Johnson and David Reckers allowed just one run each in over an inning of work in relief of Skuija, but Andrew Ciandro, Kevin Altamirano and Kyle King gave up 15 tallies in just 1.2 innings.  NM State had 20 hits and drew 11 walks on the day.

The Roadrunner offense didn't fare much better, getting just three hits and scoring just one unearned run.  CSUB (13-11, 1-1 WAC) got on the board in the fourth when Jake Ortega single to left and a miscue by the Aggie left fielder allowed Evan Berkey to trot home.  Ortega had two of CSUB's three hits with Will Picketts getting the other.

Justin Dehn (4-1) threw all seven innings to pick up the win for NM State.  Tristen Carranza had four hits and six RBI and Tristan Peterson was 5-for-6 with seven knocked in for the home team.

The loss snaps CSUB four-game winning streak.  To win their fourth consecutive series, the Roadrunners will need to win the rubber match which will be held tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. PST.
