`Runners Drop Twin Bill at Home

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Roadrunner softball team closed out a three-game home stand with a doubleheader against North Dakota on Tuesday afternoon. CSU Bakersfield battled the Fighting Hawks, but came up short in a twin bill at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.

CSUB 2, North Dakota 8

The `Runners got out to a strong start, tallying a run in each of the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, back-to-back singles by seniors Nicole Curry and Chris Hipa brought Ariana Acedo home. The next inning, CSUB took a 2-0 lead when Ally Miller's RBI singled plated Karah Wiseman.

North Dakota put together a four-run rally to take the lead in the top of the fourth. A pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings extended the Fighting Hawks' lead to six. The `Runners got back-to-back singles from Nadia Amezcua and Samantha Pech in the bottom of the sixth inning, but were unable to rally and fell by a final score of 8-2.

Wiseman, a junior catcher, went 2-for-2 on the game with a run scored. Curry also recorded a pair of hits while Hipa and Miller each had RBI for CSUB in Game 1. Paige Johnson, another `Runner senior, recorded two walks. Sophomore Daryn Hitzel (2-4) took the loss after pitching 3.1 innings while freshman Avery Fitch threw the final 3.2 innings in relief.

CSUB 4, North Dakota 7

CSUB jumped out to another early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Cydney Curran went from first to third on a hard hit single by fellow junior Jocelyn Betancourt and an RBI groundout by Curry put the `Runners up 1-0.

The Fighting Hawks capitalized on a pair of `Runner errors to put up three runs in the top of the second. One inning later, Victoria Minor's bases-loaded triple brought three more runs around to lift UND to a 6-1 lead.

Sophomore Julie Lewis came in during the third inning to relieve for Bakersfield starter Kiara Azevedo and only allowed one run to the Fighting Hawks over 2.1 innings pitched. UND tacked that one run on in the sixth after an error gave the `Runners a single run in the fourth inning. UND went to the bottom of the seventh with a 7-2 advantage.

Down to its final three outs, Bakersfield began to rally. Singles from Johnson and Betancourt put a pair of `Runners on base with one out. A wild pitch moved both `Runners into scoring position before Curry drove in another run with another grounder. Hipa then recorded an RBI single to make the score 7-4, but the `Runner rally ended on an infield popup.

Betancourt and Amezcua led the `Runners offense, each going 3-for-4 in Game 2 while the latter wrapped up Tuesday's doubleheader with a 4-for-7 performance. Curry tallied two RBI while Hipa added another to finish with two RBI on the day as well. Azevedo (4-3) took the loss in the second game while three `Runners pitched two innings or more in the second game.
