CSUB Suffers Pair of Walk-Off Defeats in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In what felt like a moment of deja vu, CSU Bakersfield's softball team suffered a pair of 3-2, walk-off defeats in its road doubleheader against San Diego on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners held early, 2-0 leads on the Toreros in both contests, but let their leads slip twice in the bottom of the seventh.

"We came out aggressive in both games," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We need to stick to our process offensively and have a killer instinct."

CSUB 2, San Diego 3

San Diego looked as if it would take a one-run lead in the bottom of the second inning on a double from Kelli Kufta with a runner on first. A great relay throw from left fielder Nakaila Fuggs to shortstop Cydney Curran to catcher Karah Wiseman gunned down the Torero at home and kept the game scoreless through two innings.

In the top of the third, a single by Wiseman followed by a throwing error put `Runners on the corners for Curran. The speedy junior legged out an infield single to plate Wiseman and give CSUB a 1-0 lead. Curran then stole second and an errant throw allowed Fuggs to come around and score for a two-run advantage.

USD got a leadoff double in the bottom of the fourth from Sara Silveyra, who advanced to third on a wild pitch. CSUB traded an out for a run on an RBI grounder, but Bakersfield's lead had been cut in half, 2-1.

CSUB's Daryn Hitzel and USD's Delaney Heller continued to throw a pitchers' duel until the Toreros came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Down to its final three outs, San Diego began to rally. Hitzel allowed two runners to reach before sophomore Julie Lewis came in to relieve from the bullpen. Lewis got an out, but a walk loaded the bases. Hitzel returned to the circle looking for the final two outs, but back-to-back RBI singles completed San Diego's comeback as the Toreros took their first victory over the `Runners.

Curran finished the game going 1-for-2 with an RBI, a steal, four putouts, and five assists. Hitzel (2-5) took the loss despite throwing six solid innings. Walks hurt the `Runners as CSUB's two pitchers combined for eight total bases on balls in the first game of the doubleheader.

CSUB 2, San Diego 3

Senior Paige Johnson led off the second game with a walk and eventually scored on freshman Ally Miller's RBI double. Later in the frame, redshirt senior Nicole Curry plated Miller on a sacrifice fly to give CSUB its second 2-0 lead of the day. Senior Chris Hipa then recorded a two-out triple, but Bakersfield was unable to extend its advantage to three runs.

In the bottom half of the first inning, CSUB starter Kiara Azevedo gave up five-straight one-out singles as San Diego tied the score up 2-2. The freshman responded to record the final two outs of the inning, but Bakersfield's lead had vanished.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the third, freshman Avery Fitch came on to relieve for Azevedo. The native of Chowchilla, Calif. struck out the first Torero she faced, then induced Bakersfield's second inning-ending double play of the game to get out of trouble.

Another pitchers' duel between two relievers broke out as Fitch and USD's Madison Earnshaw combined to keep the score tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. San Diego started to rally again and found itself with a runner on third and only one out. Just as in the first game, an RBI single finished the job as the Toreros took their second, 3-2, walk-off victory of the day. Fitch (0-2) suffered the loss despite allowing just one (unearned) run in 4.1 innings of work.

On the doubleheader, the `Runner offense tallied just seven hits and one walk, failing to provide the CSUB pitching staff with much run support. Bakersfield's defense committed just one error in the pair of games and combined for four double plays on Saturday. Curran, who hails from Ewa Beach, Hawai'i, went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI and two stolen bases.

Tomorrow

The `Runners (7-12) and Toreros (11-14) are set to return to the USD Softball Complex Sunday afternoon to close out the series with one final game. The scheduled time for first pitch on Sunday is noon.
