`Runners Win Seventh Straight at Home, Sweep FDU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield offense exploded for 17 runs on 16 hits on Monday afternoon at Hardt Field.  The Roadrunner baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson with the win and have now won seven games in a row at home for the first time since the 2013 season.

"It feels good to be back at home," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard.  "We've been challenged on the road early and that's what we wanted.  There's certainly a different feel at home for our guys, but really it's about finding our rhythm and our timing and the more games we play the sooner we will find it."

With the victory, the `Runners (9-9) are now .500 on the season and completed the first four-game home sweep since they knocked off Portland four straight times in 2017.  The 16 hits tied a season-high that was set against Ball State in the season's opening weekend and the 17 runs are tied for the fifth-most in school history.  The last time a CSUB team scored 17 runs was on May 3, 2014 when it registered 19 at Northern Colorado.

"We're doing a much better job staying short to the ball and not popping out and striking out as much," said Beard.  "We're not chasing.  Those are all good signs for our offense.  The pitching has been there.  We've gotten a lot of quality starts from our pitching staff and if that offense and defense continue to grow, we have a chance to compete in any three-game set with anybody."

After allowing Fairleigh Dickinson to score first two runs of the ballgame on Monday, the Roadrunners scored 17 unanswered for the dominating win.  The `Runners got on the board and took control for good in the third after putting up eight runs.  CSUB's first nine batters in the inning reached base safely, including eight by a base hit.  The Roadrunners batted around again in the bottom of the eighth and put up five more runs to close the scoring. Every `Runner that came to the plate recorded a hit and every batter that had a plate appearance reached first base on Monday.

Catcher Jake Ortega was 3-for-3 with a pair of walks and three RBI to lead the attack, while Nick Grossman matched him with three hits, three RBI and three runs scored.  Both players also had a double.  Noah Barba, Will Picketts, Sergio Robles and Tyler Jorgensen all produced a pair of RBI.  Eric Charles was hit by a pitch, walked, scored twice and made a great diving catch in the outfield.

Isaiah Moten (1-2) picked up his first win of the season after allowing two runs and five hits in five innings.  The CSUB bullpen had a nice bounce-back effort on Monday.  Kenny Johnson, David Reckers and Noah Cordova combined to pitch the final four innings without allowing a run.  The trio allowed just three baserunners, with Reckers working a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

CSUB will hit the road for the next two weekends.  The `Runners will head to Hawaii for a four-game series beginning Thursday and will then travel to New Mexico State to open conference play the following weekend.
