`Runners Suffer Pair of Tough Losses in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. – In a pair of gritty battles, CSU Bakersfield's softball team fell to Ball State and Montana on the second day of the Silicon Valley Classic. The Roadrunners took an early lead over Ball State, but were unable to hold off the Cardinals' rally. Despite a strong performance from CSUB's starter in Game 2, Montana used a big seventh inning to surge past the `Runners.

CSUB 6, Ball State 8

After Nadia Amezcua was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the second inning, Chris Hipa's single found CSUB with `Runners on the corners. With two outs, the `Runners capitalized on back-to-back miscues by Ball State as an error followed by a wild pitch allowed Bakersfield to score two runs. Senior Paige Johnson capped the inning with an RBI single to give CSUB a 3-0 advantage.

The `Runners extended their lead in the top of the third thanks to a pinch-hit RBI from Samantha Pech. The freshman's single drove in Nakaila Fuggs and put CSUB ahead, 4-0. The Cardinals were able to break through in the bottom half of the third, scoring three unearned runs after an error prolonged the inning.

Ball State tacked on another pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 5-4 lead. The `Runners answered in the top of the fifth to tie the score when Pech recorded her second RBI single of the day. The Cardinal offense continued to roll and scored three more runs to close out the fifth inning with an 8-5 lead.

With the bases loaded in the sixth, freshman Kayla Tadewosian was hit by a pitch to drive in CSUB's sixth and final run of the game. The last two batters in that frame struck out and Bakersfield was unable to rally in the seventh, falling 8-6 to Ball State.

Johnson, Bakersfield's starting third baseman, reached base safely in all four plate appearances with two singles, a walk, and a hit by pitch. Pech and Hipa both recorded a pair of hits as well while the former tallied her first two collegiate RBI on Saturday.

The Bakersfield starter, freshman Avery Fitch, pitched 3.2 innings, scattering four hits and two walks while striking out three Cardinals. All three of Fitch's runs allowed were unearned and she received a no decision. Sophomore Julie Lewis took a tough loss after pitching 1.1 innings in relief while freshman Kiara Azevedo recorded the final three outs for CSUB.

CSUB 3, Montana 7

The `Runners and Grizzlies battled through four scoreless innings with CSUB's Daryn Hitzel and Montana's Colleen Driscoll fighting in a pitchers' duel. Montana finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Cami Sellers hit a triple to score two unearned runs due to a CSUB error earlier in the frame.

In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Cydney Curran recorded her third triple of the tournament and set Johnson up with an RBI opportunity. Bakersfield's senior delivered a single that scored Curran and cut CSUB's deficit in half.

Montana loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh and then back-to-back singles increased the Grizzly lead to 5-1. Fitch came in to relieve Hitzel and induced a double play, but UM scored two more runs, sending CSUB to its final three outs with a 7-1 deficit.

Sophomore Ariana Acedo, making her first start of the season, led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to the gap. Amezcua plated Acedo with an RBI single before Fuggs' grounder brought Amezcua home to make the score 7-3. The `Runner rally ended there and CSUB fell to the Grizzlies.

With 14 putouts at first base, Acedo came up just one shy of CSUB's Division I single-game record. Hitzel induced 14 groundouts in the game while throwing six innings and giving up just two earned runs in the loss. Johnson finished the day with four hits and two RBI while Amezcua, a fellow senior, went 3-for-3 in Game 2 with an RBI of her own.

Tomorrow

The `Runners (5-6) are scheduled to finish out the Silicon Valley Classic on Sunday with one final game. CSUB will match up against tournament co-host San José State with first pitch set for 11:30 a.m.
