Softball Drops Silicon Valley Classic Finale

SAN JOSE, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield had a tough task in closing out the Silicon Valley Classic against a strong San José State squad. The Roadrunners fell by a score of 6-0 to the Spartans, who placed second in the Mountain West Conference last season after posting a 16-8 record in league play and a 32-17 record overall.

Junior Cydney Curran gave the `Runners a great scoring opportunity after leading off the third inning with a triple. SJSU responded well and recorded three-straight outs, stranding Curran to keep the game scoreless. In the bottom of the third, the Spartans put two runners in scoring position with no outs and capitalized to take a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning.

SJSU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Daryn Hitzel, pitching in relief, got the second out, but walked a Spartan to bring the fourth run of the game home. Freshman Kiara Azevedo came on and got the `Runners out of trouble with a fly ball. In the bottom of the sixth, a triple followed by a sacrifice fly pushed SJSU's lead to 6-0.

The `Runners were unable to rally in the seventh and ended up with a 1-4 record at the Silicon Valley Classic, falling to 5-7 overall on the season.

Curran, who hails from Ewa Beach, Hawai'i, tallied four triples this weekend to bring her season total to five. That number not only places the junior shortstop among the nation's leaders, but it also ties Curran for CSUB's Division I single-season record with Karissa Veiga (2014) just 12 games into the year.

Kayla Tadewosian, Ally Miller, and Chris Hipa all tallied one hit in the game for the `Runners while Miller and Karah Wiseman added a walk each. Freshman Avery Fitch took the loss in the circle after pitching three innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits and a walk. Hitzel pitched 1.2 innings in relief with no earned runs allowed while Azevedo gave up two runs in 1.1 innings of work.

CSUB will look to get things rolling again next weekend when Bakersfield heads to St. George, Utah for the Red Desert Classic. The `Runners will play five games over three days, Mar. 1-3, in a very competitive field. CSUB has contests lined up against host Southern Utah, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame (RV), and No. 21 Baylor, as well as a rematch with Utah State.
