Another D'Arcy Record Caps Strong Pepperdine Meet

LOS ANGELES – The Pepperdine Winter Invitational came to a close Sunday evening, but not before the CSU Bakersfield swimming teams could enjoy seeing another school record broken. Sophomore Autumn D'Arcy continued to dominate her events, resetting her own school record in the 200 butterfly as the Roadrunners closed the weekend meet with a bang.

"I'm really happy with how the men and women did this weekend," said Chris Hansen, Bakersfield's Director of Swimming. "They raced hard, had tons of excitement, and showed that they are ready to attack at the WAC Championships."

Hansen started his individual mentions with the same two women who dominated all weekend: "Mikayla Popham and Autumn continue to break records left and right. Mikayla's 100 free was so close to our oldest women's record. Once we get past our training camp, she will be unstoppable. Autumn's 200 fly is still a new event for her and she is really learning how to swim it. I really think she is going to surprise some folks."

D'Arcy, a native of Redlands, Calif., won the 200 fly (1:59.14) by more than two seconds while lowering her own CSUB record by more than two tenths of a second. Popham, a freshman standout for the `Runners, placed second in the 100 free with a time of 50.15, good enough for third all-time for CSUB.

"Jayssie Haynes also continues to be on track with a great 200 breast," Hansen said before adding that the senior swam great on Sunday night. Haynes finished 11th overall in the event on Sunday night with a mark of 2:21.79.

Hansen also mentioned Ariane Skeggs, Lucy Peltz, and Maddie Cosgrove as standout performers on the meet's final day. In the 1650 free, Skeggs placed ninth with a time of 17:28.40 while Peltz came in close behind at 17:34.84 to finish 13th. Cosgrove also made the 200 fly A-final along with D'Arcy and she posted a best time in the prelims at 2:03.89.

For the `Runner men, Hansen pointed out Ryan Brimer and Loren Gillilan as Sunday's leaders while noting Kris Rogic sat out to rest for the US Open in ten days: "Ryan's 100 free was a great swim. This kid attacks every race like a champion. Loren's 200 fly is also a newish event for him and he is learning to swim it like a WAC Champion."

Brimer's 100 free prelim time was his best of the day as the junior touched the wall in 45.22. A fellow junior, Gillilan swam the 200 fly in 1:50.55 while finishing 12th in the finals.

Other highlights on the day for Bakersfield's men included Alex Rodriguez (16:04.79) and Benji Duenas (16:06.15) in the mile as the pair finished back-to-back for 11th and 12th place, respectively. Antonio Milin (2:05.58) and Misho Mohammed (2:05.72) both saved their best for Sunday night's 200 breast final. Richie Campbell's 100 free time of 45.97 was impressive while Adrian Paseta swam well in the 200 fly (1:52.59).

The `Runners have wrapped up their big weekend in Los Angeles and they will return to Bakersfield to continue the grind of their long season. A small core of the squad will head to the US Open in Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 4-8, while the rest of the women's team will begin prepping for its Dec. 14 road dual against Fresno State.
