CSUB Swimmers Tackle Roadrunner Invite

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Another strong day of swims helped CSU Bakersfield's teams close out alumni weekend with a solid showing. With over 65 Roadrunner alumni on campus to support CSUB, Bakersfield's men and women both finished second at the Roadrunner Invite on Saturday at the Hillman Aquatic Center.

"Kris Rogic, Loren Gillilan, Mikayla Popham, and Autumn D'Arcy are setting themselves up to possibly be the first `Runners to go to NCAAs since Mitchell Huxhold," said Chris Hansen, Bakersfield's Director of Swimming. "It would be the first time we've sent a woman to NCAAs at the Division I level, so it's a really exciting time for us."

"It was a really good day all around," Hansen continued. "We have now competed three weeks in a row and with such a young team. They have all stepped up and are doing their thing. It's been really fun and I'm super happy. Beating California Baptist on both sides on both days is really setting us up well in the WAC."

Women

Sophomore Ariane Skeggs got the `Runners started with a second-place finish in the 1000 free (10:29.96). Fellow Australian and freshman Mikayla Popham also tallied a second-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.74. Sophomore Autumn D'Arcy came in less than half a second behind Popham to finish fourth (1:53.21). D'Arcy also won the 100 free with a time of 51.60, more than half a second faster than any other woman on Saturday.

In the 200 butterfly, senior Maddie Cosgrove (2:05.33) and junior Maya Valdoria (2:06.73) took second and third place, respectively, scoring big points for the `Runners.

Hansen also complemented senior Jayssie Haynes, who has been working hard this season: "Jayssie won the 200 breast, which was great for her. She had a tough spring, but she's coming back to where she was." Haynes touched the wall in 2:22.65 to earn CSUB's women a victory in their home meet.

The `Runner women placed second out of five teams behind UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. CSUB held a large margin of victory over third-place California Baptist, 428-279.5, which bodes well for the Bakersfield women at next Spring's Western Athletic Conference Championships.

Men

On Saturday, the `Runner men closed the meet with a thrilling, come-from-behind victory in the 400 free relay. Loren Gillilan tracked down his opponent from UC Santa Barbara in the third leg, giving the `Runners a slim lead, and Kris Rogic held off the Gaucho advances for a two-tenths of a second victory (3:02.32).

"We have never had a 400 free relay go 3:02 in a dual meet," Hansen said. "Ryan Brimer, Richie Campbell, Loren Gillilan, and Kris Rogic are by far the fastest, so we finished the weekend with the fastest dual meet 400 free today and the fastest dual meet 200 free yesterday."

Hansen continued on about one of his top student-athletes on Saturday: "Ryan Brimer had a great meet today. He was fast in the 200 free and 100 free and did a great job with the relay." A junior from Santa Clarita, Calif., Brimer placed second in the 200 free (1:40.44) before winning the 100 free with a time of 45.96.

Noah Hultner got the day started off well, taking a victory in the 1000 free (9:43.90) by almost six seconds. Gillilan (1:49.74) and Rogic (1:53.62) finished first and third, respectively, in the 200 fly. Gillilan also placed second in the 200 IM (1:53.96) while Rogic finished second in the 200 back (1:50.33).

Bakersfield's men also finished second behind UCSB and, like the `Runner women, defeated California Baptist.

Next Meet

The `Runners will have next weekend off before returning to competition. CSUB will head to Riverside, Calif. for a Nov. 2 tri-meet against California Baptist and Pomona-Pitzer.
