Mansur-Wentworth Announces Athletes & Scholar-Athletes of the Year

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Corbin Chronister and Julianne Finch have been named CSU Bakersfield Track & Field Athletes of the Year, while Gabe Gaeta and Angel Valdez were named Scholar-Athletes of the Year by Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Marcia Mansur-Wentworth

"I am proud to bestow these honors on each of them," said Mansur-Wentworth. "All four of these student-athletes are great ambassadors for the university, the Athletics department and specifically the track and field team. They all actively engage in team functions, community service and represent our university well."

Chronister posted six first-place victories this spring as a freshman. The 6-foot-4 thrower finished the season 15th and 20th on the all-time depth chart in the discus and hammer, respectively. Chronister was named Western Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week once and earned All-WAC honors in discus and shot put at the WAC Outdoor Championships.

Finch finished her sophomore campaign with 10 top five marks. The 5-foot-3 pole vault specialist reset the all-time record three times this season and earned All-WAC honors at both the WAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships.

Gaeta, a team captain, finished the 2017-18 academic year with a 3.4 cumulative grade point average in Geology. The redshirt junior recorded seven top five finishes in the 400-meter hurdles this spring, tabbed his second all-conference nod at WAC Outdoor Championships, has earned WAC All-Academic honors twice in his career and ranks 8th all-time on the program depth chart.

Valdez posted the highest cumulative grade point average among track and field athletes this year. The distance specialist graduated in May with a 3.86 in Mathematics. She set three school records in cross country, earned an all-conference award at WAC Indoor Championships in the 1500-meter and holds the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 14th best marks on the track and field depth charts in the 10,000-meter, 5,000-meter, 3,000-meter and 1,500-meter, respectively. A three season athlete (cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Valdez leaves Bakersfield with a total of 10 WAC All-Academic honors.

"Both Gabriel and Angel embody the term student-athlete," added Mansur-Wentworth. "They bring excellence to all that they do and are terrific leaders."
