`Runners Drop Game Two to NM State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Head coach Jeremy Beard unexpectedly started preseason All-American relief pitcher Naithen Dewsnap on the mound, but the CSUB bats didn't get started until it was too late as New Mexico State University claimed Game 2 of the three-game series on Saturday night at Hardt Field.

Making his first career start in a CSUB (10-19, 1-4) uniform, Dewsnap (1-3) tossed a career-high 5.1 innings on a new high 83 pitches.  The senior shutout a potent Aggie lineup through the first five innings and faced just 18 batters.  In the sixth however, Dewsnap allowed a bunt single to start the inning and threw away a second bunt attempt that put runners at the corners with nobody out.  After a sacrifice fly that put NM State on the scoreboard, the hurler hit the next two batters to load the bases.  The Aggies' Caleb Henderson hit a two-run double to chase Dewsnap and Aaron Charles allowed his two inherited runners to score as the Aggies scored five in the inning.

NM State (18-13, 5-3) added three more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth as the lead continued to grow.  The CSUB offense managed just four hits through the first eight innings, before finally getting on the board in the ninth.

Andrew Penner singled to lead off the ninth and also extended his reached base safely streak to 28 games.  Pinch hitter Luis Martinez blasted the second double of his career to right center field in the next at-bat and scored Penner all the way from first.  Christian Deaton followed with a groundout to the first baseman to knock in Martinez.  With two outs, Mark Pena knocked in Sergio Robles, who singled and moved to second on a wild pitch earlier in the inning, on a base hit to center field and complete the scoring.

Pena had two hits for the second consecutive game and leadoff man Austyn Tengan had his first three-hit game of his career.

Steven Gee faced the minimum in the ninth in his first appearance on the mound of the 2018 season.  Jonathan Groff (6-2) earned the victory for NM State after throwing eight shutout innings.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. at Hardt Field for the series finale.
