`Runners Fall in Series Finale to NM State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Roadrunners dug themselves an early hole that they were unable to climb out of on Sunday at Hardt Field as New Mexico State University defeated the CSU Bakersfield baseball team in the series finale, 5-2.

The Aggies pounced on CSUB (10-20, 1-5 WAC) starter Davonte Butler (1-5) in the top of the first inning.  The visitors scored three runs on three hits to take an early advantage, and after the `Runners went down in order in the bottom half, NM State added two more unearned runs in the second to stake a 5-0 advantage.

Butler ran into trouble again in the fourth inning.  He allowed a two-out walk and hit the next batter before turning the ball over to fellow freshman Elijah Parks.  Parks got his first batter to groundout to Alec Daily at first base to escape the inning.  Parks remained on the mound the rest of the way and cruised through the NM State lineup.  He tossed the final 5.1 innings and allowed just two hits and struck out four batters.  The outing was the second-longest of his career as he threw 5.2 innings in relief against Dartmouth College on March 17.

The CSUB offense got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Jassen Oliver singled to center field to score Alec Daily.  The `Runners had a chance to tack on more in the seventh as Luis Martinez and Daily were at third and second base, respectively, with just one out, but CSUB was unable to get the runs home.  They did add a solo tally in the eighth as Christian Deaton singled home Tengan, who walked earlier in the inning.

Alex Pinedo (3-1) earned the victory for NM State after throwing the first five innings and allowing just one run on two hits.  Logan Bottrell had three hits and two doubles from the leadoff spot to power the Aggie attack.

CSUB will remain at home on Tuesday when it hosts Cal Poly at 6:00 p.m.
