`Runners Take Game 1 From Redhawks

BELLEVUE, Wash.  – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team scored two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to turn a 4-3 deficit into a two-run advantage and Andrew Ciandro had the best outing of his young career to lead the Roadrunners to a 7-5 victory on Friday night at Seattle U.

Trailing 4-3 in the seventh inning, CSUB (16-24, 6-7 WAC) took a one-run advantage on RBI groundouts by Daniel Carrizosa and Evan Berkey.   Sergio Robles walked to start the inning, and Jake Ortega followed with a base hit bunt.  Ortega dove head first to reach safely and while everyone was collecting themselves, Robles alertly moved to third and Ortega followed suit on the throw over.  Carrizosa scored Robles and Berkey knocked in Ortega.

In the eighth, Andrew Penner and Ryan Koch both reached on errors to start the inning and with both runners in scoring position and the infield in, Luis Martinez singled up the gut to put CSUB out in front 7-5.

Ciandro (1-0) was masterful in relief in Game 1 of a three-game conference set.  He entered the game in the seventh with runners on first and second and nobody out.  After giving up a single to his first batter that allowed a run to score, the freshman retired the next three batters to strand a pair.  Ciandro stuck out a pair in the eighth and chucked a perfect ninth to earn his first career victory.  He tossed three innings and gave up two hits while striking out three.

"Ciandro has been working extremely hard at his new delivery," said CSUB head coach Jeremy Beard.  "He's been waiting for an opportunity and took complete advantage tonight.  He's competitive by nature and now has confidence in what he is doing.  It is exciting to see that kind of growth out of a freshman."

Making his first start since March 17 vs. Dartmouth College, Noah Barba made a huge impact for the `Runners.  He singled and scored on a double by Penner in the first and clubbed his first career home run in the third to tie the game at three.  He had his first career three-hit game and scored twice.

"Noah took quality at-bats all game," said Beard.  "He likes to compete and impacted the game tonight.  Aside from his plate appearances he made a big-time catch to minimize Seattle U's push.  He has been injured for weeks and that has kept him off the field."

CSUB chased starter Tarik Skubal after he gave up five runs in seven innings.  Skubal didn't receive a decision, but he entered the game 6-0 with a 3.54 ERA.  Tyler Yeh (4-5) took the loss for Seattle U after allowing two unearned runs in two innings.

"We limited our strikeouts against a very good arm and put pressure on their defense," said Beard.  "That is something we look to do and need to do to have success with this lineup."

The `Runners had 10 hits on the evening.  Martinez and Penner both had two apiece, while Berkey walked, singled and scored.  Alec Daily pitched six innings to start the game and struck out six.  He scattered eight hits and walked four, but gave up just four runs.

CSUB and Seattle U will meet up again tomorrow evening.  Naithen Dewsnap (2-4) will go for the `Runners and will be opposed by Jake Prizina (5-0).  First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
