`Runners Head to Seattle to Take on Redhawks

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team will head to Seattle U on Friday to battle the Redhawks for a three-game WAC series.  Friday night's first pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.

Dugout Talks

Series History
CSUB leads the all-time series against the Redhawks, 12-8. The Roadrunners took 2-of-3 from Seattle U in last year's regular season series and also beat the Redhawks 10-4 in the WAC Tournament.  In the last series at Bannerwood Park, Seattle U took all three games from CSUB.  The `Runners are just 1-5 all-time at Seattle U.

The Redhawks got a good look at Saturday starter Naithen Dewsnap last season as he picked up two saves against them in 2017.  He made three appearances and struck out eight batters in 4.1 innings pitched.  Right fielder Sergio Robles had the biggest game of his career against Seattle U last season in the WAC Tournament.  Robles slugged two home runs in the 10-4 victory and hit .471 with a 1.000 slugging percentage in four games against them last year.  Left fielder/Catcher Jake Ortega has had plenty of success against Seattle U in his career as well.  The junior is hitting .357 against the Redhawks and has swiped two bases.  Senior third baseman Luis Martinez went 1-for-3 in his only start against Seattle U in 2017.

Scouting the Redhawks
Seattle U was picked to finish fourth in the preseason WAC rankings and that is exactly where it stands midway through the conference slate.  Friday starter Tarik Skubal was a preseason All-WAC selection and he's certainly lived up to the billing.  Skubal is 6-0 with a 3.54 ERA so far this season.  The Redhawks rotation is lefty heavy and has a 4.36 ERA.

The Redhawks are hitting .300 as a team, led by Austin Lively and Dalton Hurd at .368 each.  Hurd also leads the team in slugging (.618), RBI (40), home runs (7), doubles (13) and hits (53).

Skubal ranks ninth in the WAC in ERA and is holding opposing hitters to a conference-best .174 batting average.  He's also struck out 67 batters in just 48.1 innings pitched.  In his last start against UTRGV, he allowed three runs in 5.2 innings and struck out 12 batters.

CSUB Seattle
Saturday RHP Naithen Dewsnap (2-4, 3.63 ERA) LHP Jake Prizina (5-0, 3.78 ERA)

Dewsnap is coming off the best start of his career against Sacramento State, but took the loss in Game 2 against the Hornets.  The senior tossed 6.2 innings and struck out five, while allowing three earned runs.  Dewsnap yielded two homers in the start, which accounted for all of Sac State's runs.

Prizina leads the Redhawks with 64.1 innings pitched and has struck out a team-best 68 batters, a category in which he ranks third in the WAC.  The junior didn't receive a decision in his last start against UTRGV.  He struck out seven in 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits.

CSUB Seattle
Sunday RHP Elijah Parks (3-1, 4.54 ERA) LHP Nick Meservey (0-0, 3.00 ERA)

Parks remains in the rotation for the third straight weekend.  The freshman has thrown six innings in both of his conference starts.  He didn't receieve a decision in his last start against Sacramento State after throwing six innings and striking out eight.

Meservey has made four starts on the year and has 43 strikeouts in just 31.2 innings pitched.  The redshirt junior lasted just two innings in his last start against UTGV and walked three batters and gave up three hits, while striking out three.

Last Time Out
The CSU Bakersfield baseball team received an excellent start from sophomore pitcher Isaac Meza, but fell to Loyola Marymount University 4-1 at Page Stadium on Tuesday night.

Meza (1-1) tossed a career-high seven innings and struck out four batters.  On four occasions, Meza retired the Lions in order.  He allowed a two-run homer in the fourth inning that put LMU up 2-0.  Meza also allowed a solo tally in his final inning of work.

CSUB answered quickly after going down 2-0.  Jassen Oliver led off the inning with a double to start the inning and moved to third on a single by Sergio Robles.  Jake Ortega stroked a sacrifice fly to center field in the next at-bat that allowed Oliver to trot home.

Kevin Altamirano also pitched well for CSUB.  He tossed the eighth inning and allowed an unearned run.

The `Runners struggled to get the bats going all evening as LMU used six different pitchers to keep the CSUB hitters off balance.  Penner stretched his hitting streak to nine games, while Martinez singled and walked.  Robles also had a pair of base hits.
