CSUB Hangs on to Win Thriller, Extend Winning Streak

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Leading 7-1 and heading to the ninth inning, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team seemed like it would cruise to a series-opening victory over Sacramento State, but the Hornets scored five runs in the ninth and had the bases loaded with two out when Kyle King struck out the final batter of the game to preserve the victory for the Roadrunners.  It was the fifth straight win for CSUB.

Starter Alec Daily (4-1) was cruising on the mound entering the ninth inning.  He had allowed just one earned run, five hits and had struck out eight batters through the first eight innings.  In the ninth, he allowed a leadoff home run and a single, before recording his career-high ninth strikeout.  The Hornets chased Daily as the next batter walked to put runners on first and second.

Head coach Jeremy Beard called on junior Ben Cutting next and after a wild pitch that allowed both runners to move up a base, he got a flyout to left for the second out.  Cutting walked his next batter and then allowed a single and Sacramento State cut the lead to 7-4.  With two men on base and two out, James Outman hit a two-run triple to pull the visitors within one run.  Beard then turned to King to get out of the jam.  The redshirt junior hit his first batter and then walked his second to load the bases with two away.  After falling behind 2-0 to Steven Moretto, King threw three straight strikes to catch him looking and CSUB walked away with the victory.

"I had confidence in my stuff," said King.  "I should've got the first guy. It was 0-2 and I went slider, slider and hit him because I wanted to get beat with my best pitch."

Daily tossed a career-high 8.1 innings and allowed four runs in the victory.  Cutting was charged with the other two, and King recorded his third save of the season.  Parker Brahms (4-3) took the loss after giving up five runs, just two of which were earned, in five innings.  Brahms entered the game with a 1.61 ERA, which led the WAC.

"Our guys came out to play tonight against a very good pitcher and team," said Beard.  "Alec pitched an excellent ballgame and deserved the win tonight.  Things got close late and it shows why we need to play every pitch and winning is hard work."

Junior Ryan Koch had his second three-hit game of the season, and his first two gave the `Runners the early lead.  Koch led off the second inning with his third home run of the season and put CSUB up 2-0 and he drove in Evan Berkey in third on a base hit through the right side.

Senior Luis Martinez stayed hot on Friday as he stroked a two-run double in the fifth.  In the next at-bat, Jassen Oliver put the home team up 5-0 as he singled home the third baseman, Martinez.  After Sacramento State scored its first run in the top of the seventh, the `Runners answered right back in the bottom half as Daniel Carrizosa singled to score Oliver.

The CSUB offense produced 11 hits on the evening, the third time in five games they've reached double digits in that category.  Oliver also stayed red-hot with two more hits, a walk, a RBI and a run scored.

"That's a quality team that we need to play a complete game to beat," said Beard.

The Roadrunners have won five consecutive games and will be in search of another complete game tomorrow night when they host the Hornets for Game 2 of the three-game series.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
