Game Recap: Baseball |

`Runners Take Doubleheader from Utah Valley

OREM, Utah – The CSU Bakersfield baseball was in need of a Western Athletic Conference series victory, and they got just that on Saturday as the Roadrunners swept a doubleheader at Utah Valley University.  The `Runners won the first game 6-2 and came back to earn a 7-6 victory in the nightcap.

"This was a great team day," said CSUB head coach Jeremy Beard.  "These guys overcame some obstacles to earn a sweep against a quality team.  Our guys continue to show fire in their bellies and that's all we can ask every day out."

Game 1: CSUB 6, Utah Valley 2
The CSUB (12-21, 3-5 WAC) offense exploded for 14 hits, including seven by Jassen Oliver and Sergio Robles combined, and the Roadrunners got solid performances out of pitchers Alec Daily and Ben Cutting as they snapped an eight-game losing skid.

The `Runners got on the board in the second when Luis Martinez led off the inning with his second career home run.  Daniel Carrizosa added the second run of the inning on a two-out double that scored Oliver.

"Martinez started the day off with a big hit and it caught our guys' attention," said Beard.  "It is nice to see these guys rally around each other and play every pitch."

The Wolverines added solo tallies in the second and the fourth off of Daily to tie the score, but the `Runner offense came alive in the sixth in the seventh innings.  Oliver led off the sixth with a single and came around to score when Robles doubled in the next at-bat.

After making a spectacular catch in the bottom of the sixth, Oliver came through again for the visitors in the top of the seventh.  He stroked a single up the middle with the bases loaded that scored Andrew Penner and Ryan Koch to give CSUB a 5-2 advantage.  Robles followed with another single that scored Martinez to complete the scoring.

Daily (3-1) was effectively wild on Saturday and earned the victory after tossing the first five innings and allowing just one earned run, despite surrendering three hits and seven walks.  The senior also struck out five in the outing.

Making his first appearance since March 15 against Dartmouth College, Ben Cutting was phenomenal in relief of Daily, pitching four scoreless innings and facing just two above the minimum to earn the save.

Oliver had a career-high three hits and set a new career-best with two runs scored.  Robles also had a career-best four hits in five tries and knocked in a pair.  Evan Berkey also had a pair of hits from the leadoff spot to aid the attack.  The `Runners' 14 hits as a team were the most since they had 15 at the University of Portland on March 4.

Game 2: CSUB 7, Utah Valley 6
Things didn't seem to be going in CSUB's favor in Game 2.  The `Runners trailed 5-1 after seven innings, the offense had been held scoreless for four straight frames and starter Naithen Dewsnap (2-3) had allowed 13 hits.

That changed quickly in the eighth inning as the offense batted around, scored six times and took a 7-5 lead over the Wolverines.  With out, Evan Berkey walked, Jake Ortega singled and Andrew Penner doubled to left center to cut the Utah Valley to 5-2.  Back-to-back errors by the home defense allowed CSUB to make it a one-run game and Jassen Oliver hit an infield single to load the bases for Sergio Robles.  Robles worked an eight-pitch walk that forced in a run to tie the game at five.  In the next at-bat, Christian Deaton pinch-hit for Daniel Nist and hit a chopper to the pitcher that looked to be two outs.  The Wolverine hurler tossed the ball home for a force out, but the Utah Valley catcher launched the throw to first up the line and allowed two runs to score.

In the eighth, Kyle King took the ball from Kevin Altamirano with baserunners on first and second with nobody away.  King walked his first batter to load the bases, but got back-to-back strikeouts and a flyout to center field to escape the inning.

CSUB went down in order in the top of the ninth inning, but the home team made some noise in the bottom half.  The Wolverines led off the inning with a double, but King got the second batter to strikeout.  After allowing a base hit to cut the lead to 7-6, King got tough and got a strikeout and another flyout to center to collect his first save of the season.

The `Runners got on the board first in the third inning, when Nist crushed his first career home run off of the batter's eye in center field.  Penner and Oliver both had two hits to pace the offensive attack as the `Runners took advantage of five defensive miscues by Utah Valley.

Dewsnap struck out five in seven innings to earn his second victory of the season, while King struck out four in two innings.

"Dewsnap made a lot of pitches today and forced a lot of bad contact," said Beard.  "Give them credit, they found holes and fought hard but we were able to take advantage of their mistakes.  Cutting and King came out of the pend and did a fantastic job down the stretch."

Robles and Oliver both had five hits over the two games.  Oliver scored three times on Saturday to lead the team, while Robles knocked in three.  Penner and Berkey both had three hits in the doubleheader.

"Our goal was to earn 54 outs today and we did that," said Beard.  "It is very difficult to play two games on the road in one day and win both.  Tomorrow is a new day and we will look to play every pitch."

The `Runners go for the series sweep tomorrow as the finale begins in Orem at 12:00 p.m. MT.
