CSUB Hosts Cal Poly at Hardt Field

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - For the second time in a week, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team will play a non-conference game against Cal Poly.  Tonight's game against the Mustangs will be played at Hardt Field at 6:00 p.m.

Series History
The two clubs met last Tuesday in San Luis Obispo with the Mustangs claiming a 6-0 shutout victory.  Tonight's starter Kevin Altamirano allowed an unearned run in the game after walking three batters.  Overall, the bullpen was outstanding against the Mustangs as they allowed just one hit and no earned runs in 5.2 innings pitched.  Davonte Butler, Kyle King, Aaron Charles and Isaiah Moten all had spotless appearances.  At the plate, Alec Daily had two hits.

All-time, this will be the 26th meeting between the two programs.  Cal Poly has won 19 of the previous 25 meetings and enter the game on a four-game winning streak against the Roadrunners.

Freshman Kevin Altamirano will take the mound for his first career start on Tuesday night.  The right-hander's last appearance also came against the Mustangs last week.  He pitched one inning and did not allow an earned run, despite walking three batters.  Altamirano has not allowed an earned run in four of his last six outings, dating back to March 3 against the University of Portland.

The Mustangs will counter with left-hander Thomas Triantos.  Triantos has made four starts this season and nine overall appearances.  Opposing hitters are batting just .229 off of the sophomore.  In his last appearance, Triantos tossed a scoreless fifth inning against CSUB.  Austyn Tengan had an infield single off of Triantos and he stuck out Daniel Carrizosa to start the inning.

Last Time Out
The `Runners dropped all three games over the weekend to WAC rival NM State.

On Friday, Alec Daily (2-1) kept the `Runners within striking distance in his third start of the season.  The senior allowed a run in the second inning and an unearned run crossed the plate in the fourth.  Daily left the game after he walked the leadoff man in the seventh and committed a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt.  Kyle King relieved him and allowed his two inherited runners to score.

The CSUB bats finally woke up in the seventh inning.  Mark Pena led off the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the Aggie catcher.  Daniel Carrizosa followed with a RBI single to get the `Runners on the scoreboard and chase NM State starter Kyle Bradish.  After Austyn Tengan hit into a fielder's choice, Jake Ortega walked and Andrew Penner singled to load the bases.  Ryan Koch followed with a run-scoring base on balls and Evan Berkey hit a sacrifice fly to center field to pull the `Runners within one.

In the eighth, NM State hit a three-run homer off of King to put the game out of reach.

Naithen Dewsnap got his first career start on Saturday and shut out a potent Aggie lineup through the first five innings and faced just 18 batters.  NM State touched him up for five runs in the sixth though and added three more in the seventh and another in the eighth.

The CSUB offense managed just four hits through the first eight innings, before finally getting on the board in the ninth.  Andrew Penner singled to lead off the ninth and also extended his reached base safely streak to 28 games.  Pinch hitter Luis Martinez blasted the second double of his career to right center field in the next at-bat and scored Penner all the way from first.  Christian Deaton followed with a groundout to the first baseman to knock in Martinez.  With two outs, Pena knocked in Sergio Robles, who singled and moved to second on a wild pitch earlier in the inning, on a base hit to center field and complete the scoring.

On Sunday, the Aggies pounced on CSUB starter Davonte Butler (1-5) in the top of the first inning.  The visitors scored three runs on three hits to take an early advantage, and after the `Runners went down in order in the bottom half, NM State added two more unearned runs in the second to stake a 5-0 advantage.

Elijah Parks was phenomenal in relief of Butler.  He tossed the final 5.1 innings and allowed just two hits and struck out four batters.  The outing was the second-longest of his career as he threw 5.2 innings in relief against Dartmouth College on March 17.

The CSUB offense got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Jassen Oliver singled to center field to score Daily.  The `Runners had a chance to tack on more in the seventh as Martinez and Daily were at third and second base, respectively, with just one out, but CSUB was unable to get the runs home.  They did add a solo tally in the eighth as Deaton singled home Tengan, who walked earlier in the inning.

Welcome Back Gee
After dealing with arm injuries over the last three seasons, redshirt senior Steven Gee made his 2018 debut against New Mexico State on Saturday night.  Gee walked the first batter he faced, but got the next Aggie hitter to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.  The redshirt senior faced the minimum in the inning as he got the next hitter to pop up to Austyn Tengan to end the inning.

Gee had a tremendous start to his career as he tied for the team lead in appearances in each of his first two seasons in a Roadrunner uniform.  As a freshman, he posted a 2-1 record and a 3.67 ERA and started five games.  He was even better as a sophomore as he went 5-4 with a 2.55 ERA and held opposing hitters to a .253 batting average.  Gee tossed a complete game shutout in the biggest game in CSUB history.  In the WAC Tournament Championship, he didn't allow a run against Sacramento State and put the `Runners into the NCAA Tournament.

Gee took a medical redshirt in 2016 after he made just five starts and made just one appearance in 2017 before getting bit by the injury bug again.

Dewsnap Gets the Start
Senior closer Naithen Dewsnap made his first career start on Saturday against New Mexico State.  Dewsnap had made 43 consecutive appearances out of the bullpen leading up to the start against the Aggies.  The preseason All-American was dominant over the first five innings on Saturday, allowing just three hits and facing just 18 batters.  Dewsnap ran into trouble in the sixth inning as the NM State got on with a pair of bunts and a couple of hit batters before a two-run double closed the book on the closer.  He took the loss in his first start and his final stat line was 5.1 innings pitched, five runs, three earned runs and three strikeouts.  The appearance was a career long for Dewsnap.

Penner's Streak Stopped
After not reaching base safely in the season opener against UC Davis, senior Andrew Penner had reached base safely in 28 consecutive games before going 0-for-4 on Sunday in the series finale against NM State.  That streak is tied for third all-time in CSUB history with Brandon Boren in 2010.  David Metzgar set the CSUB record with a streak of 37 games last season.

The preseason All-WAC selection has carried the CSUB offense so far this season.  He leads the team in batting average (.357), at-bats (112), hits (40), total bases (47), walks (13), hit by pitches (7) and on-base percentage (.455).

New Look Staff
Just four of the 15 CSUB pitchers that have appeared for the `Runners this spring made more than one appearance for the team last season.  The new staff has won seven games this season and have accounted for 175.1 innings pitched out of a total of 258.2, good for nearly 68 percent of the possible outs.  The 11 pitchers have combined for a 5.76 ERA and an 7-12 record with 135 strikeouts.  Alec Daily has been particularly effective this season after missing the last two seasons because of Tommy John surgery.  The redshirt senior is 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA in six appearances and three starts.  The lefty has struck out 23 batters in 22.2 innings pitched and is holding opposing hitters to just a .213 average.
