`Runners Drop Series Opener to Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team got on the scoreboard early against the College of Charleston, but ultimately didn't score enough as they dropped the series opener, 13-1.

Things couldn't have gotten off to a much better start for the Roadrunners (6-9) on Friday.  Noah Barba and Andrew Penner led off the game with singles.  Eventually, Jake Ortega drove in Barba on a groundout to the shortstop as CSUB took an early 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the `Runner offense, those would be the only two hits the lineup would muster until Luis Martinez singled to lead off the ninth inning.

Aaron Charles (1-3) gave up runs in the first and second inning before allowing five runs in the third.  Eventually, Charles settled in and retired the final 10 batters he faced.  Kevin Altamarino relieved Charles in the seventh and allowed the remaining six runs in 1 1/3 innings.  Daniel Carrrizosa recorded the final two outs for the `Runner staff.

With the base hit in his first at-bat, Penner extended his reach base safely streak to 14 games and has a base hit in five straight games.

Evan Sisk (3-1) tossed the first five innings for Charleston to earn the victory.  Leadoff man Dupree Hart set the table for the Cougars, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.  Centerfielder Luke Morgan was 3-for-5 with two RBI from the No. 3 spot in the order.

The two teams will take the field again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. EST.  Sunday's game has been moved up to 12:00 p.m. EST.
