Baseball Hangs Tough, Falls at Charleston

MT. PLEASANT, S.C.  – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team kept fighting all the way to the end on Saturday afternoon at the College of Charleston, but was unable to keep pace with a potent Cougar lineup and dropped Game 2 of the three-game series, 7-3.

Freshman Davonte Butler started out strong against the Cougars (12-3).  After allowing a leadoff single to start the game, he retired 10 straight hitters before giving up a double in the fourth inning.  Charleston scored two in the inning and added three in the fifth to chase Butler.  The freshman's final stat line was five innings pitched, seven hits, four earned runs and a strikeout against a strong Charleston lineup.

"Davonte continues to show a veteran presence out there as a freshman," said head coach Jeremy Beard.  "He's poised and his best pitching is ahead of us.  He's a worker and extremely coachable."

The Roadrunners (6-10) trailed 5-0 after the fifth inning, but scored a run in the sixth, a run in the seventh and another in the ninth to keep the game within reach.

CSUB faced a tough task offensively against Cougar starter Griffin McLarty (3-0).  McLarty was coming off of a complete-game shutout of the University of Georgia and now sports a season ERA of just 0.76.  The `Runners finally got to McLarty in the sixth when Jared Toothman got the visitors on the board on a single that scored Ryan Koch

The `Runners added an unearned run in the seventh and continued to fight in the ninth.  Noah Barba's sacrifice fly to left allowed Evan Berkey to score his second run of the game and complete the scoring.

"Our guys have plenty of fight inside them," said Beard.  "The key to our long term success is our attitude and will to get better.  These guys are relentless and we need to understand what our strengths are and work from there.  It's never easy when you don't have experience and that has shown up in the preseason so far."

Jordan Ragan pitched the final three innings for the visitors and struck out three, while allowing two runs.  Andrew Penner, Jake Ortega and Alec Daily all had a single and a walk to lead the offensive attack.  Penner extended his hitting streak to six games and his reached base safely streak is now at 15.

The `Runners will to look to avoid the sweep tomorrow against the Cougars.  First pitch at The Ballpark at Patriots Point is slated for 12:00 p.m. EST.
