CSUB Heads to CSUN for Mid-Week Affair

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team will make the short trip to CSUN tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference game at Matador Field.

Series History
The two teams should be familiar with each other as they played earlier this season on February, 27.  The Matadors (9-14) claimed an 8-1 victory at Hardt Field and were powered by Nolan Bumstead's two home runs and five RBI.  CSUN used eight pitchers in the game and Cassius Hamm earned the victory after tossing a perfect third inning.  Kyle King took the loss for the Roadrunners (10-15, 1-1 WAC).  The redshirt junior tossed 2 1/3 innings and gave up five earned runs, but did strike out six.  Andrew Penner had two hits for CSUB and Jassen Oliver had a RBI single.

All-time, CSUN leads the series 13-12.

Last Time Out
The `Runners opened conference play at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley over the weekend.  After defeating the Vaqueros on Friday night, CSUB lost the final two games of the series to UTRGV.

Alec Daily tossed seven no-hit innings on Friday to earn the victory.  He set a new career-high with the seven innings pitched and a new career-best with eight strikeouts.  Freshman Jared Toothman was 4-for-4 with a walk, a double and two RBI.  Sergio Robles blasted the `Runners' first grand slam since 2011 in the eighth inning, and Naithen Dewsnap captured the save in the 8-5 victory.

Despite outhitting the Vaqueros 7-6, CSUB was unable to get on the scoreboard on Saturday and lost, 5-0.  Ryan Koch and Andrew Penner both had two hits apiece to lead the attack, but the `Runners hit into three double plays and were only able to get multiple baserunners one time.  Davonte Butler was saddled with the loss, despite giving up only two earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched.

On Sunday, the `Runners trailed 5-3 in the seventh inning with two outs, but Mark Pena doubled to knock in Buck Anderson and Daily singled to tie the score.  Daily moved all the way to third on the base hit due to an error by the UTRGV left fielder, but was stranded 90 feet from home as Robles struck out to end the threat.

Dewsnap allowed a home run in the eighth to give the home team a 6-5 advantage and CSUB was unable to score Jake Ortega from third base in the ninth as the `Runners dropped the three-game series.

The CSUB bullpen got out of a number of jams to keep the game close.  Kyle King entered the game with a baserunner on third and one out in the third inning and got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.  King loaded the bases in the sixth and Kevin Altamarino and Dewsnap mitigated the damage.  Altamarino allowed a single, but got the next batter to pop up to Austyn Tengan before handing the ball to Dewsnap.  Dewnsap got a short fly out to right field and a groundout to Tengan to end the inning.

As a team, the `Runners hit just .219 for the three-game series.

The Kid Is Clutch
Freshman outfielder and Bakersfield native Jared Toothman has made the most of his opportunities to begin his career.  In just 51 at-bats, he ranks second on the team with with a .294 batting average and only ranks behind Ryan Koch in RBI with 12.  The freshman leads the team with two sacrifice flies.  For the season, Toothman is 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position and is 7-for-14 with two outs in the inning.  Seven of his 12 RBI have come with two outs.

In his WAC debut, Toothman was 4-for-4 with a walk, a double and two RBI in the `Runners victory last Friday night.

Penner Powering Attack
Senior Andrew Penner continues to be CSUB's most effective hitter.  The senior corner infielder/designated hitter has reached base safely in the last 24 games.  For the season, Penner has hits in 19 of the `Runners 25 games and had a 10-game hitting streak earlier this season. Penner is currently the only `Runner with a batting average over .300 and has 11 more hits than any other player on the team.  He also leads the team in total bases (41), slugging percentage (.441), walks (11), hit by pitch (6), on-base percentage (.473) and stolen bases (4).

Daily Doing It All
Senior Alec Daily has been doing it all for CSUB lately.  After missing all of the 2016 and 2017 seasons because of Tommy John surgery, Daily has been one of the best pitchers on the team.  In just his second start of the season on Friday, the senior held UTRGV with out a hit for the first seven innings, before allowing a three-run triple.  In the sixth inning, he made a spectacular play on a bunt attempt that looked to be a base hit, but he hustled to the ball and threw to first while falling over to get the force out. The seven innings were a career-long outing and the eight strikeouts he recorded were also a career-best.  The `Runners won the ball game and Daily earned his second win of the season.  On the mound, Daily has struck out 20 batters in 16.2 innings pitched and has compiled a 3.24 ERA.

Daily also had a succesful week at the plate.  At San Diego State, Daily knocked in Evan Berkey in the middle of a `Runner rally that saw the visitors take a 4-2 advantage.  On Sunday, he tied the game at five with a single that scored Mark Pena.
