Last Time Out
Over the weekend, CSUB took three out of four games against Dartmouth to earn their first home series victory of the 2018 season.  In Sunday's victory the Roadrunners set a new school record with eight stolen bases, breaking the old mark of seven that was set against Seattle U last year.

It was a quick 4-1 victory on Thursday night as Ben Cutting (1-3) earned his victory on the mound of the season.  Cutting went a career-long 6 2/3 innings and allowed just one earned run in the seventh inning.

"He (Cutting) was dialed in," said CSUB manager Jeremy Beard.  "We had a short hook on him last weekend for a reason, to bring him back on Thursday and he did exactly what we hoped he would do.  Hopefully, he builds on that and continues to grow.  He's a very competitive left-handed pitcher that we expect big things out of," said Beard.

A Ryan Koch two-run triple in the first inning was all the `Runner staff needed, but Jared Toothman added to the effort with a two-run, pinch-hit single to left field in the seventh.  Naithen Dewsnap finished off the Big Green in the ninth for the first of his two saves of the weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, the CSUB offense scored three runs in the first inning to provide the pitching staff with some early run support.

Elijah Parks (2-0) earned the victory on Saturday after tossing the final 5 2/3 innings in relief of CSUB starter Alec Daily.  Parks didn't allow an earned run the rest of the way and even surprised his coach that he was able to go the distance.

"I wasn't expecting him to go the complete distance after coming in in those middle innings, but he stayed with it," said Beard.  "His velo (velocity) stayed up and he kept making pitches. He was very composed today.  He focused on using his lower half a little bit more.  He had more depth on his pitches.  He had a lot of confidence out there and he was just being who he is.  Really, for him, we count on him a lot and put him in tough situations even as a freshman."

Aaron Charles (2-3) shut out the Big Green for the first five innings on Sunday to earn his second victory of the season.  Kyle King also threw well for the `Runners as he got out of a jam in the sixth inning to preserve a slim CSUB lead.  Dewsnap closed it out with a six-out save.

Offensively, Koch carried the attack, slugging .923 over the four games and hitting .385 with two doubles, a triple, a home run and six RBI.  Toothman was also instrumental to the offense as he drove in eight runs on four hits.  Andrew Penner had seven hits in the first three games of the series, before having his 10-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday.  Penner continues to get on base consistently for CSUB and has reached safely in 20 straight games.  The senior also led the team with five runs scored in the four-game set.

Austyn Tengan was one of three `Runner regulars that was on-base over half the time this weekend and led the group at .611.  Tengan walked five times, had six hits and swiped three bases in the series.  Mark Pena also seems to be breaking out of a season-long slump.  The centerfielder was 3-for-7, walked and was hit by a pitch.
