`Runners Take Series with Second Straight Win

Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Roadrunner offense pounced early on Dartmouth College again on Sunday and Aaron Charles provided the team with a solid start on the mound as the CSU Bakersfield baseball team won the four-game series with a 7-5 victory. 

For the second straight game, the CSUB (9-12) offense scored three runs in the first inning.  Austyn Tengan singled to start the game and stole the first of his three bases on the day to move to second.  Evan Berkey singled to shortstop that was thrown away to score Tengan.  Berkey moved to second on the play and came around to score on a double by Jared Toothman.  After a walk by Ryan Koch, and a double steal by Toothman and Koch, Jassen Oliver grounded into a fielder's choice to score Toothman. 

The stolen bases were a theme throughout the day for the `Runner offense as they set a new single-game record with eight stolen bases, breaking the previous mark of seven that was set against Seattle U last season. 

Charles (2-3) cruised on the mound through the first five innings as he blanked the Big Green attack for the first five frames.  He ran into some trouble in the sixth, but Kyle King stepped in to bail out the big righty.  With two runs already across the plate in the inning, King stepped in with runners on second and third with nobody out.  King got the first batter to fly out to right field that allowed a run to score, but he got back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning. 

CSUB allowed an unearned run to cross in the top of the seventh, but answered in the bottom half as Andrew Penner came home on Koch's second double of the day. 

Leading 6-4 after seven complete innings, head coach Jeremy Beard called on Naithen Dewsnap to close it out.  The senior allowed an unearned run in the eighth and could've allowed one more if not for a spectacular throw by Oliver.  With nobody out in the inning and runners at the corners, Dewsnap got a flyout to Oliver in right field and he promptly nailed the Dartmouth runner that tried to tag up and score at home.  Dewsnap finished the inning with a strikeout. 

The CSUB offense provided Dewsnap with some insurance in the bottom half.  Mark Pena was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches.  With one out, Tengan brought in Pena with a line drive single to make the score 7-5. 

Dewsnap allowed a two-out walk in the top of the ninth, but rallied to get the final batter to ground out to third.  It was Dewsnap's fourth save of the season. 

Koch had a big day for the `Runner offense as he went 3-for-3 with a walk, two doubles, two stolen bases and a pair of RBI.  Tengan had two hits, walked twice and had three stolen bases.  Penner had his 10-game hitting streak snapped, but did extend his reached base safely streak to 20 games. 

CSUB will head to San Diego State University on Tuesday for a non-conference game beginning at 6:00 p.m.
