Charles Powers `Runners to Victory

PORTLAND, Ore.  – Behind an impressive pitching performance from sophomore Aaron Charles, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team got back in the win column on Thursday evening by defeating the University of Portland, 5-1.

Charles (1-2) started hot of the gates en route to an impressive, career-long start against the Pilots (3-5).  The sophomore retired the first seven batters he faced before finally relinquishing a base hit.  The Bakersfield native needed 93 pitches to get through seven innings of work and allowed just one earned run on seven hits.

"AC came out and set the tone by attacking the zone with authority," said CSUB manager Jeremy Beard.  "His presence on the mound was much better tonight.  He commanded all three pitches and was for the most part, effective with pitches outside the zone."

Charles received some run support before even stepping foot on the mound this afternoon.  Luis Martinez knocked in his first run of the season on a sacrifice fly in the first inning that scored Jassen Oliver, who led off the game with a base hit to center.

In the second, Jared Toothman led off the inning with his second double of the season and also came around to score on a sacrifice fly, this time by Daniel Carrizosa.  Later in the inning, with Mark Pena at third, Andrew Penner hit the ball to the third baseman, but Lewis Dirkes wisely stayed in a rundown long enough to allow Pena to score before being tagged out.

Ryan Koch got into the act when he blasted his first career home run, a two-run shot, in the fifth that gave the visitors a commanding 5-0 advantage.

Trouble began to brew in the eighth for the `Runners after Charles' departure, but closer Naithen Dewsnap came in to slam the door on the Pilots.  With runners and second and third with nobody out, Dewsnap got two strikeouts with a pop up to Carrizosa in between to escape the inning.  The senior also tossed the ninth to nail down his second save of the season.

The `Runners' (3-7) Davonte Bulter (1-1) looks to continue CSUB's winning ways as he gets the start on the mound for tomorrow's game at 3:00 p.m.  Eli Morse will get the ball for the Pilots.
