Four-Run Tenth Inning Propels Young `Runners to Victory

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.  – The CSU Bakersfield baseball seemed to be cruising to another victory on Friday night as they led 3-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the University of Portland refused to go quietly as they scored twice in the eighth and once more in the ninth to send the game into extra innings.  However, the `Runners used some late-inning magic to score four times in the top of the 10th and earn a 7-3 victory over the Pilots.

Ryan Koch led off the critical 10th with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Jake Ortega followed with a beautiful bunt down the third base line for a base hit that moved Koch up to third.  Lewis Dirkes walked to load the bases with nobody out in the inning.  Evan Berkey, who had three hits, a walk and a triple in the game hit a one hopper to the second baseman who through home for the force out, but threw low and allowed Koch to score the winning run.  Mark Pena busted out of slump in a big way with a two-run single that scored Dirkes and Ortega to make the score 6-3.

"Mark came through and changed the game with a quality at-bat in the 10th," said `Runner skipper Jeremy Beard.  "They brought in a sinker baller and he was able to cut it off and get one through the infield."

Later in the inning, Berkey came in to score on a balk to complete the scoring.

"This was a gutsy win by our guys tonight," said Beard.  "We played every pitch and showed signs of maturity during adversity.  That's a quality road win for our guys.  We got better tonight."

Davonte Butler (1-1) gave the `Runners (4-7) their best start of the season.  The freshman tossed 7 1/3 innings and yielded just three hits and three walks, while allowing two earned runs.  The start was the longest of the season for CSUB and his seven strikeouts were a career-high.  Naithen Dewsnap earned the victory after tossing the final 2 2/3 innings.  He allowed one unearned run on four hits and struck out four batters.

"Davonte was locked in tonight, getting ahead in counts and making pitches when it mattered," said Beard.  "He showed poise throughout his outing."
Including Butler, the `Runners started five freshman this evening and brought another freshman, Dirkes, in off of the bench.

CSUB broke through against Pilot starter Eli Morse in the fifth inning with three runs.  Buck Anderson and Daniel Carrizosa were both hit by pitches to start the inning.  After a failed bunt attempt, Andrew Penner hit an infield single in the hole between the third baseman and the shortstop, which was thrown away by the Pilot shortstop.  The throwing error allowed Carrizosa to scamper home for the first run of the game.  Koch followed with a two-run double to give Butler some breathing room.

Noah Barba, Penner and Berkey all hit multi-hit games for the `Runner lineup.  Berkey and Penner have now reached base safely in 11 and 10 straight games, respectively.

The Pilots (3-6) and `Runners square off again tomorrow for the third game of a four-game series.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.  The pitching matchup is expected to be CSUB's Ben Cutting (0-1) against the Pilots' Corbin Powers (1-1).
