CSUB Falls To UC Davis In Game 2 Of Opening Series

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Eleven hits for the CSU Bakersfield baseball resulted in just one run as the Roadrunners fell to UC Davis on Saturday afternoon. The Aggies struck early and often in a 15-1 victory at Hardt Field.

The top half of the second inning turned out to be a big opportunity for the Aggies. UC Davis earned a pair of one-out walks and got an RBI single and a three-RBI home run. Another home run later in the frame would help Davis jump out to a 6-0 lead on the `Runners and starting pitcher Kyle King.

In the bottom of the third, the `Runners started a two-out rally after a fielding error prolonged the inning. Senior Andrew Penner's single put a `Runner in scoring position before junior Ryan Koch drove in his first run of the season with a single to right field.

CSUB reliever Isaac Meza struggled against the Aggie hitters as well and was pulled after giving up five runs in the fourth. UC Davis found itself with a 11-1 lead after three and a half innings.

UC Davis added a run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and one more run in the eighth to head to the ninth inning with a 15-1 lead over the `Runners. In the top of the ninth, freshman Buck Anderson snagged a line drive and doubled off the runner at third to help CSUB get out of a bases-loaded jam.

In the bottom of the ninth, Noah Barba tallied the 11th hit of the game for CSUB, all singles, but was stranded as the `Runners fell by a final score of 15-1.

Bakersfield got a pair of hits from Penner, senior Mark Pena, and Barba, while Koch posted the only RBI of the day for the Bakersfield. Penner, the starting third baseman, wound up on base all four times at the plate thanks to a pair of walks. King took the loss as UC Davis' Chris Brown earned the win and Brett Erwin picked up a three-inning save.

The `Runners (0-2) will return for the final game of the series against the Aggies (2-0) on Sunday. First pitch at Hardt Field is scheduled for noon.
