CSUB's Offense Ignites For 14-7 Win Over UC Davis

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Roadrunner baseball team put a slow start behind its back as CSU Bakersfield closed its season-opening series against UC Davis with a 14-7 win on Sunday at Hardt Field.

"After the way the last two days have gone, it was great to see our guys come out and compete and get up off the ground like that," said Jeremy Beard, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We are proud of their effort and their ability to compete the way they did today."

After recording just two total runs in the first two games of the series, CSUB's offense ignited to the tune of 14 runs on Sunday. Coach Beard said it was just a matter of time: "We were getting awfully antsy early in the count, wanting to swing too often. We had to get back to `Runner baseball, which is grinding out at bats and getting into the bullpen. That's exactly what we did today."

"I was really proud of Davonte Butler and Jordan Ragan," Beard said of his two pitchers. "Davonte had that one hiccup, but I'm really happy with both of their abilities to come in and throw strikes and have some conviction with what they were doing today."

In the bottom of the first inning, the `Runners loaded the bases with a pair of walks and an infield single. Jassen Oliver saw one pitch and was hit by it as CSUB's designated hitter drove in the first run of the game. Alec Daily's grounder brought another `Runner home and a throwing error on the play helped CSUB go ahead by three runs. Freshman Evan Berkey plated the fourth run of the inning on an RBI single as the `Runners enjoyed a 4-0 lead early on.

The Aggies attempted to respond in the top of the second, putting a pair of runners on base, but freshman Davonte Butler struck out two batters to keep UC Davis off the board. In the bottom half of the second, Oliver's triple to the center field wall drove in a pair of runs on the way to a three-run frame for the `Runners.

UC Davis loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the third. Butler plunked the next batter and walked the following Aggie as UCD cut the CSUB lead to five runs. Alejandro Lara's two-out, two-RBI single would make the score 7-4 before Butler ended the inning by fanning his fifth Aggie of the game.

Jake Ortega's triple in the bottom of the fifth plated Berkey and gave the `Runners an 8-5 lead after UC Davis scored in the top half of the inning. The next inning, a two-RBI single by Oliver capped a four-run burst as CSUB surged ahead, 14-5.

Junior pitcher Jordan Ragan came into the game in the sixth inning and pitched four strong innings to help the `Runners hold on for a 14-7 victory. For his efforts, Ragan earned the save while Butler's five innings with five runs, five strikeouts, and just one walk resulted in the win.

Three `Runners – Ortega, Andrew Penner, and Berkey – tallied three hits while Oliver's two hits came along with a game-high five RBI. The designated hitter's RBI total tied for third-most in a single-game in CSUB's history.

CSUB (1-2) has wrapped up its season-opening series with UC Davis (2-1), but will return to Hardt Field on Monday to close out the homestand. The `Runners will host Saint Mary's with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
