Swimming and Diving Teams Open Dual Season Saturday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield swimming and diving teams will be back at the John S. Hillman Memorial Aquatic Center on Saturday when they take on Western Athletic Conference rival California Baptist in the first dual meet of the season.  Last season, the Lancer men finished second in the nation at the NCAA Division II level, while the women finished 10th

In the home opener last weekend, the CSUB men's team finished third out of three teams at the CSUB Spring Classic and the Roadrunner Invite, while the women's team finished fifth and third, respectively.  The women's team finished ahead of San Jose State on Saturday for the first time in Director of Swimming Chris Hansen's tenure.

The two teams met in a dual last season in Riverside.  The women's team was victorious, winning 158.-141.5, while the men's team was defeated 169-131.

"Standouts Kris Rogic and Loren Gillilan are both going to have tough races, however for the men to win they can not just depend on those two and Benji Duenas, Richie Campbell, Justice Kramer and Jake Chir," said Hansen.  "They will need folks like Owen Van Krimpen, Jaren Hopkins and Noah Hultner to step in and swim like they are capable of.  Divers Adam Estrella and Nate Cummings will also need to show the WAC what they can do."

Last weekend, the trio of sophomore led the way for the Roadrunners.  Rogic won the 50-yard backstroke (22.99) and placed third in the 200 back (1:52.93).  Gillilan touched fourth in the 50 butterfly (22.42), the 50 free (20.93) and the 100 free (46.30), while Duenas also captured three top-five finishes.  Duenas placed fifth in the 400 individual medley (4:04.37), fourth in the 100 IM (52.93) and third in the 500 free (4:40.09).

California Baptist's men's team is coming off a 172-128 victory over UNLV last Saturday.  Sophomore Jacob Leahy is one of the Lancers' top swimmers.  He earned WAC Swimmer of the Week honors after a dominating performance at Pepperdine, where he won the 100 back (50.50) and the 100 fly (50.44) while also swimming the lead leg on the 200 medley relay (1:32.61).  As a freshman, he was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and earned NCAA Division II All-American honors as a part of three relays.

Garrett Chew has also been impressive off of the diving boards, earning the most recent WAC Diver of the Week honor after he won the 3-meter dive (323.55) and finished ninth in the 1-meter (239) at the Lancer Dive Invite.  Chew won honorable mention All-America honors in both events at the Division II level last season.

"The women will have an easier time then the men but still need to be on their A game," said Hansen.  "Like the men, the women just can't depend on a few ladies to win.   Jayssie Haynes, Autumn D'Arcy, Bella Magalong and Sabrina Zavala all had a great meet last weekend but they will need all the swimmers and divers to step up for the ladies to have their first WAC win of the season."

Haynes recorded her first victory of the season on Saturday, touching first in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.47) at the Roadrunner Invite.  She also had a fourth-place showing in the 200 IM (2:08.17) and placed second in the 400 IM (4:27.62).  D'Arcy also came through in a big way as she contributed two second-place finishes.  The freshman swam a 25.09 in the 50 fly and a 2:06.62 in the 200 IM .

Zavala contributed her impressive start to the season in the distance events, taking third in both the 500 free (5:06.67) and the 1,000 free (10:30.31), while Magalong produced top-10 finishes in the 200 breast (2:26.14), the 200 IM (2:11.33) and the 400 IM (4:36.03).

The Lancer women's team lost to UNLV 187-107 last weekend.  California Baptist's rosters features one of the top divers in the conference.  Emily Dunkerson has won two of the first three WAC Diver of the Week awards.  Dunkerson was a Division II All-American last season on the 3-meter board and an honorable mention All-American in 1-meter diving.  In the pool, Emily Longfellow also earned WAC weekly honors.  Longfellow earned two honorable mention All-America awards last season as she finished 11th in the 400 IM (4:26.44) and the 400 free relay (3:25.35).

Action at the Hillman Aquatics Center begins at 12:00 p.m.
