BAKERSFIELD, CA – The CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team has three games remaining in the regular season and the `Runners control their own destiny to get into the Western Athletic Conference tournament.
The `Runners (6-9-1) are tied for fifth place in the WAC at 1-2-1 with Seattle U and Grand Canyon sits in seventh at 1-3. And what a surprise, the `Runners, Seattle U and GCU all play each other in the final three games to see who gets into the tourney. CSUB will travel to Seattle U (5-8-2) for the pivotal WAC matchup on Friday, Oct. 20 with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. One thing the `Runners have going for them heading to Seattle is Seattle U is winless at home with a record of 0-3-2.
Seattle U is led by sophomore Jessie Ray's seven goals and 2 assists, as well as freshman Leahi Manthei's 6 goals and one assist. On paper, this is as close of a matchup as you can get.
"What a huge weekend for our program, beginning on the road
on Friday night," CSUB Head Coach
Gary Curneen said. "There is no bigger challenge in the WAC than going to Seattle in search of a result. Our mindset and commitment to both the game plan and each other will be tested to the maximum, and we have to tick both boxes in order to win the game. We have performed at that level in different stages of the season so we know we are capable of it. I can't wait to see how we approach it when the whistle goes."
Sunday, Oct. 22, the `Runners come home to face Utah Valley (7-10) who sits 3-1 in the WAC and all alone in second place in the conference. But, the Wolverines are also 2-9 on the road this year, so that is another positive for CSUB going into the weekend. Utah Valley comes to Bakersfield with the most prolific offense in the WAC, having five players with double digit points.
Also, Sunday is Senior Day at Main Soccer Field with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. The `Runners will be celebrating the academic and athletic accomplishments of
Morgan Cole,
Maja Green and
Michele Day.
