Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Julian Zamora scored a pair of goals to lead CSU Bakersfield past Sacramento State 3-1 in the 2016 men's soccer season opener for both teams Friday night.
Freshman Louis Lapouge opened the scoring for the 'Runners in the fifth minute when he took a long pass from Hugo Vinales and broke the seal with a shot from the 18-yard mark. Zamora was set up for the second goal when Jamie Carey-Morrell sent a pass to Lapouge who sent the ball to Zamora. Zamora dribbled in and scored from 12 yards out.
Paul Geyer got the Hornets on the board with a goal in the 57th minute. Zamora provided an insurance goal in the 60th minute when his long blast went into the lower right portion of the Sacramento State net. Vinales earned the assist on the play.
“I am certainly pleased with our victory,” said CSUB head coach Richie Grant. “Our finishing was so clinical. Julian could have had a hat trick tonight, but in the end, he helped us win the game. I thought he was rewarded for his effort both on the offensive and defensive end of the field.”
The match was played in front of 1,104 fans, the sixth largest crowd in CSUB's Division I history. The 1,104 on opening night was the second largest crowd in which the Roadrunners have played in front of in the program's first home match in a season. 1,164 witnessed the home opener against UC Davis on Sept. 13, 2004. The Hornets outshot the Roadrunners 13-6, but only 5-4 on goal. Sacramento State held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
CSUB returns to the Main Soccer Field Sunday night when the 'Runners host Drake at 7 p.m.
