BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- CSUB forced a season-high 24 turnovers including a program-record 16 steals as the Roadrunners (21-8, 11-3 WAC) used a big second-half and cruised to a 93-71 win over Seattle U (13-15, 7-7 WAC) Saturday night at the Icardo Center.
CSUB's defense and guard play made the difference as Bakersfield used a balanced scoring effort with four players in double digits led by Dedrick Basile's game-high 17 points on 5-of-10 from the field and 2-of-4 from three-point range. Basile was joined by Damiyne Durham who scored 16 points on 5-of-9 from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point range. Durham didn't play in the first half and converted on key three-pointers to help stretch the CSUB lead at critical moments as the 'Runners took control in the second half.
With both teams having their tournament seeds already confirmed, head coach Rod Barnes says his team's effort Saturday night was indicative of their style of play.
“I'm not surprised about the way these guys play and I am very pleased with the way we played,” he said. “The staple of our team is to work hard and to play together and try to win every game and I thought our guys came out and showed the brand of basketball we like to play.”
The 'Runners trailed briefly by four in the first half following the second of four three-pointers for Manroop Claire, but CSUB would respond by building their own eight-point lead as they shot 13-of-26 from the field. Seattle cut the CSUB lead to 33-29 at the half.
The Roadrunners would open the second half on a 6-2 run and built a double-digit lead they would never relinquish following a technical foul on Seattle head coach Cameron Dollar. Basile converted on the free-throws and CSUB led by 10, Matt Smith added a quick layup off a steal and Durham hit the second of his four three-pointers to stretch the lead to 15 points with just over 14 minutes remaining.
CSUB led by 11 points with 6:54 remaining when Seattle started fouling intentionally. The Roadrunners would then convert on 22 of 33 free-throw attempted through the end of the game. Despite building a 20-point lead with 3:25 to play and 25-point lead with less-than a minute remaining, the Redhawks continued to stop the game by fouling the Roadrunners and sending them to the free-throw line until the final buzzer.
The 'Runners defense was joined by a solid offensive effort that included a 15-of-29 (52%) mark in the second half from the field and 4-of-9 from three-point range (44%). CSUB was 28-of-55 from the field in the game, good for 51-percent. The 'Runners were also 7-of-14 from three-point range in the win while scoring 32 points off the 24 Seattle turnovers. Bakersfield also outscored the Redhawks 40-28 in the paint.
“The effort was tremendous, I don't know how many floor burns we had, how many guys tried to take charges and tried to block shots,” Barnes said. “It was just a great effort from our guys and I'm just so thankful, what a great season we've had so far and I think we've got a lot more playing to do.”
Seattle had four players scoring 12 points in the game led by William Powell's 12 points and 11 rebounds on 4-of-6 from the field. Claire had 12 as well but after going 3-of-5 in the first half from three-point range, he managed just 1-of-5 in the second half.
CSUB celebrated the senior careers of Aly Ahmed and Kevin Mays in a pregame ceremony. Mays finished his home career with nine points and 11 rebounds, Ahmed scored 10 points for the Roadrunners.
“It was very special to have those guys and they closed out the way they've competed, just really proud of them,” Barnes said of his seniors. “I'm thankful to God to be able to coach guys like that and this team the way they are.”
