Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz.—CSU Bakersfield dropped a pair of games at the University of Arizona Wildcat Invitational on Saturday.
GAME 1
For the second day in a row, Saint Mary's (7-5) outscored the Roadrunners late as the Gaels defeated CSUB 10-4 CSUB battled back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the score in the top of the seventh on a Saint Mary's error. The Gaels would score twice in the seventh and recorded a four-run rally in the eighth for the final runs of the game.
Zach Kirtley led SMC by going 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI's, and two runs scored. Edward Haus was 2-for-4 with three RBI's, and two runs scored. Joey Fiske went 2-for-4 for the Gaels. Drew Seelman was the CSUB leader as he went 2-for-3 an RBI. Dustin Frailey charted a 2-for-3 performance. Freshman Jake Ortega went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while David Metzgar drove in two runs.
GAME 2
A JJ Matijevic third inning grand slam proved to be the difference as Arizona defeated CSUB 4-1 in game two of the day. Ryan Haug led off the Wildcats' inning with a walk and moved to second on a Cody Ramer sacrifice bunt. Roadrunner starter AJ Monarrez walked Ryan Aguilar and Zach Gibbons before Matijevic hit his second-career grand slam, giving Arizona a 4-0 lead. Frailey put CSU Bakersfield on the board in the top of the fifth on a single through the right side of the infield, which scored Chance Gusbeth.
Monarrez gave up five hits in seven innings of work. Matijevic was the lone Wildcat with multiple hits (2-for-3). Gusbeth went 2-for-4 as CSUB charted seven hits.
“Both Hansen and Monarrez pitched well in defeat,” said CSUB head coach Bob Macaluso. “The problem has been a lock a bullpen.”
Tournament play concludes for the Roadrunners (4-6) against Northwestern State beginning at 9:30 a.m. (MST). CSUB completes the six-game road trip at UC Irvine Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
