BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's indoor track team marches into its next competition as the Roadrunners will travel back to Arizona this weekend. CSUB is set to tackle the Northern Arizona Invitational, Feb. 12-13, in Flagstaff, Ariz.
The 'Runners are familiar with Flagstaff as CSUB competed in NAU's Friday Night Duals to open the indoor season on Jan. 22. Familiarity with the NAU track and field complex should give Bakersfield an advantage this weekend.
CSUB will take its squad of women to Arizona, led by several top 'Runner performers: Tricia Cervantes, Susannah Vera, Alisha Byrd, Alicia Torres, and Angel Valdez. “Tricia will compete in the 60-meter hurdles where she improved on her 2015 best two weeks ago,” said Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, CSUB's Director of Track and Field. “She will also compete in the high jump and long jump as Tricia continues to prepare for the WAC Indoor pentathlon, where she earned All-Conference at the 2015 Championships.”
According to Mansur-Wentworth, Cervantes is not the only 'Runner who opened the 2016 season well: “Susannah is going to take on the high jump, an event she surpassed her indoor best two weeks ago. She will also run in the 60-meter hurdles where she is currently tied for fifth in the WAC standings.”
Byrd will join her teammates in the 60-meter hurdles and will also tackle the long jump and triple jump, an event in which she set a personal best in Arizona earlier this season. Torres, a former All-WAC thrower, will compete in the shot put in which she is currently eighth in the WAC.
Valdez is coming off of an outstanding cross country season and will compete in her first-ever track 5000-meter race. The sophomore excelled in 5k races during the cross country campaign and managed to crack the CSUB Top 10 in the event this fall.
Information on the NAU Invite and a schedule of events can be found here. Full results and a recap will be posted at the end of each day of competition for the 'Runners.
